Phish

Texas ~ 98

Howdy Pholks! Here's my short review of the Triphecta:
07/24/98 Woodlands Pavilion - Houston, Texas
I: Moma Dance, Runaway Jim, Bouncing Around The Room, Stash,
My Soul, Taste, Golgi Apparatus, Loving Cup
II: Wolfman's Brother-> 2001 -> Scent of a Mule -> Ha Ha Ha ->
Scent of a Mule, Slave to the Traffic Light, Chalkdust Torture
E: Character Zero

I actually didn't go to this show, as I was at Shoreline for Further
instead, but a phriend said that it was sort of weak, and the band was
a bit sloppy.

07/25/98 South Park Meadows - Austin, Texas
I: Roses are Free > Down with Disease > Roget, Beauty of my Dreams,
Ya Mar*, Guyute, Julius (63 min)
II: Piper, Wilson -> Heavy Metal Jam > Frankenstein, Tweezer ->
Circus Comes To Town -> Limb By Limb, Fee ->
Run Like an Antelope
E: Harry Hood** -> Tweezer Reprise

* with extended funk jam
** with glowstick war

I actually thought this show was kinda weak as well, despite the
great setlist, but it could've just been that I was really tired,
but again the band seemed too sloppy and just not together at all.
The first set was actually kinda nice, but short. It was a hot
day and I think the band needed the break a bit early. DWD was
very nice, but not as good as it was at Shoreline. Wilson was
very nice, again with an extended jam like in Portland. During
Tweezer is I think when the show got it's weak points. I think
Trey must have been stoned or something because he kept forgetting
when he was supposed to sing, and the jam didn't really go anywhere
for me until it just faded away into Circus. Fee was really cool,
and the Antelope that followed was so very experimental that it got
to the point where no one could tell what the hell Trey was doing,
and the band sort of lost it at times. The Harry Hood encore
was OK, but the glowstick war was totally weak.

07/26/98 Starplex Ampitheatre - Dallas, Texas
I: Birds of A Feather, Too Much of Everything*, David Bowie, Relax,
Reba**, Funky Bitch, Good Times Bad Times.
II: La Grange, You Enjoy Myself^, Albuquerque^^ -> Simple,
Axis: Bold As Love, Sample in a Jar.
E: Punch You In The Eye, Bittersweet Motel^^^

* by Joe Cooley; "pure rock-n-roll", with lyrics "too much
cake and ice cream ... too much of everything" and a refrain
of "Baby, I want you."
** with whistling
^ with trampolines
^^ by Neil Young; slow song; lyrics like "eating country ham"
and "living the only life I've known" or something in that vein.
There was a refrain that was repeated quite a few times that
went "Iiiiiiiiiiii .... (something.)"
^^^ a cover, not an original

This show was hot !!! In fact, I am having a hard time deciding if
it was better than the first night of the Gorge. Before David Bowie
Trey pointed to a guy in the first row and said, "This guy wants
something long." The crowd responded with a cheer of agreement.
By the end of Funky Bitch, I thought the set was over, saying that
it was great set right there, then BOOM!!! Good/Bad X! I was waiting
for La Grange all weekend, and I seem to think that they waited
for Dallas so that if they screwed it up then they could get out of
Texas, FAST! But this was not the case. Trey's solo was long and
reached many peaks. Then it was time for YEM. The nirvana section
was longer than I had ever heard, mostly due to the glowstick passing
game that the audience was playing with Trey. At this point glowsticks
were being thrown all over the place. One landed on the stage and
Trey picked it up and threw it out into the crowd. Then people
began throwing glowsticks at Trey and he tried to catch them with his
left hand while playing a muted single note on his guitar with his
right. When he finally caught one, he'd throw it back. During the
funk jam towards the end, Mike was teasing the bassline to Moma Dance
for a long time. I actually was convinced that they were about to
sugue into a funky Moma, but no. Instead YEM ended in the usual way
with a long and spacey vocal jam. Hot, Hot, Hot !!!

Remaining shows for me on this tour:
Raleigh, NC
Columbia, MD
Lemonwheel !!!
