The Catalyst Friday night. Bad scene. 16&under show...mobbed and tons
of shitty security.
The music took a little while to crank up. We walked in mid-"Zombie
Jamboree" (missed only "Ain't Gonna Work Tomorrow").
They went into a
bluegrassy "Sitting on Top of the World"
and then started to kick it with
"Do the Boogie".
A few nondescript regulars and then "Maggie" (from HSF
97).
They played this in Tahoe too, hopefully it will become part of
their regular repertoire.
After a couple more they finally hit their
stride with "Doin' My Time".
This smoked. Mark had a monster solo, quite
intricate
with none of the shmaltzy licks that he tends to through into
his solos.
No sooner had I commented on this when he throws in
chopsticks
(but it worked somehow) and went right back into the hot
solo.
Eventually he turned it over to Drew and we got the ever popular
hyper-drew
(you know when he starts whaling on the mandolin so fast that
your eyes can barely follow his hands).
At set break we went for a beer and aparently missed "Brain Damage".
Ugh!! what a bonehead move. Oh well...
Jim Page joined them for a rockin
song called "Naked Underneath your Clothes" and a few others
and then the
Jim Page rap (about SC of course).
After JP left they went into a
smoking "Funky Mtn Fogdown" and closed out with "Better".
Bumped into Alex on his way out. He sez hey and invited us to crash by
there place if we didn't want to make the drive back.
It's a good thing
we didn't though or we might have been trapped in boulder creek
(flooding **everywhere** around them).
To start off the encore Tye comes out and unleashed the
Baby Gramps 5000.
Ok it wasn't really a device, just some weird throat
jam that sounded like baby gramps.
From that they went into "Whispering
Water" and a full blown "Wake and Bake"
that Jim Page joined the band (and
of course the crowd for).
We headed through hwy 9 up to skyline on the way back since we were
dropping off Eric
(surely you remember the dancing hat man) in SF.
It
was weird to see the hwy buried in water the very next day.
Certainly fun, but we certainly needed more. Luckily we had 3 more days of pasta ahead of us...(to be continued)
peace and good things,
Mark
