Well another good HORDE show.
The continuing problem these shows have
in trying to showcase jamming bands is that
the nature of festival
shows tend to shorten sets.
This doesn't allow the bands to let loose.
The other problem (which was really only a problem
cuz I missed it)
was the Neil Young acoustic set that opened the event!!

Homegrown
Vince was raving about it during their set (more on LoS later)
Mike and I finally finalized plans to go Thurs nite
(this entailed one
of us saying "lets go" and the other saying
"ok, I'll call you
tomorrow")
We both had to work so by the time we made it to Shoreline
it was almost 5pm. Although it started at 3pm
we knew we were ok, b/c
Leftover Salmon didn't go on till 6pm. At this point we were trying
to figure out
what to do about tix...we were greeted by a scalper
and I
said "we were looking to pay close to face".
He said I have two 7th
row seats for $35 each.
The tix looked real so we skeptically forked over
the cash.
Sure enough we were sitting phat with 7th row seats
(never
did figure out what the angle was).
Got in and picked up food and beers in time
to catch some of Squirrel
Nut Zippers on the main stage.
Good stuff, but more or less ordinary
40's style string band.
No one could really figure out where they fit
in.
I wrote it off as just a part of the calvalcade of music.
On to the main attraction!! LoS!! Festival.
A decent size group had
gathered at the second stage.
We bumped into some friends and started
off the set with a heaping bowl of pasta
(LoS best when viewed under
the influence of pasta).
Soon after, we moved up front Drew side
(the
killer mandolin/fiddle/guitar player).
A fantastic set which was highlighted
by Paul McCandless
joining them for some horn/flute fun.
A big
euphoria is still ringing in my head.
Came back in for Big Head Todd and the Monsters.
Totally lame. Even
a bigger disappointment for me,
b/c when I saw them at a horde years
back
they really jammed. Well apparently four years of MTV
have gone to
their heads and they
more or less ground out their hits. :p
More beer...locate DMO and off to the side stage for Ben Folds Five.
I thought they where great!! 4 piece sting section, bassist, drums and
a pianist
that was so enthusiastic that he split open his thumb banging
the ivories on his very first song (his roadies thought he was joking
the first time he asked for somthing to wrap it with)
...good voice
too.
He(ben the exuberant pianist) almost sounded like Jeff Lynne(sp?)
which gave them an ELO sound.
This was fine with me as I loved ELO.
Cruised back in for PRIMUS.
Laughed at people all aghast to the
shouts of "primus sucks!"
(not only a term of endearment,
but also their
website). Les Claypool rocks!!
He doesn't look/play/or even sing
like
anybody else I can think of,
but it works for him. His onstage antics
were alot of fun. While playing with phish he had not
let loose like
this...strutting around like a chicken
with his wireless bass...truly
a sight to behold.
didn't really catch much of morphine as we wanted to catch
all of Neil
Here's Neil's set. Fiery as always. He had the candles from the last
tour on stage (but poured no wax over his guitar).
The texture of the
show was similar to that same tour
(if nothing else but for song
selection). Still great though.
He showed up ten minutes late, but
played 15 minutes past the 11pm curfew.
His bassist played the organ
on hurricane,
which was cool b/c usually Neil
sets his guitar down and
does this.

Well enough about HORDE, I need to write about HSF
before we take off
for phish :)
peace and good things,
