March 10,2002 News Article

Another successful March break hockey tournament took place this past weekend with a good crowd on hand for most of the games. I never got to catch many of the games but everybody had a good time. Unfortunately there were a couple of injuries during the tournament. This was a tough year for injuries at the arena. There have been several over the last couple of weeks and those involved have suffered from serious injuries ranging from concussions to stitches and even surgery. You always have to be very attentive and watch for flying pucks.

David Spearing was talking about his lucky shot the other week at the Silver Kings game that won him his 4-wheeler. Actually he won the value of the 4-wheeler, meaning he can choose a dirt bike, 3-wheeler or whatever he wants from the Honda dealer that donated the prize for the team.

The price of gas remained cheaper here in Blacks last week as prices jumped 3-4 cents per litre in the Saint John area and a whopping 10 cents per litre in Moncton. Analyst said the overall price of gas on the world market never increased that much, but retailers upped their price to try to make up for lost profit due to competition. It's expected that prices will drop back down at least until the next long weekend.

Vandalism seems to be on the increase in New Brunswick. Last week people sprayed graffiti all over buildings in St.Stephen while other vandals went on a tire-slashing rampage in Saint John. In Fredericton cars and businesses had their windows mashed out. Obviously these people don't realize the prices of goods and services go up to cover the damages caused by their recklessness. Luckily some of the suspects have been caught and charged. Unfortunately for those businesses in the St.George area that have been vandalized in the past months there have still been no suspects charged.

I see David Armstrong was given an invitation from Oromocto to bring his hovercraft to their community. David has had problems in the past with some communities over the noise from the craft but Oromocto residents welcomed the chance to see the rig.

N.B power announces that residential rates would go up some 3% in the near future. This announcement comes just one week after announcing the future upgrade to Point Lepreau that will cost nearly 1 billion dollars. You can bet power rates will rise dramatically over the next few years. I've been told Atlantic Canada has one of the lowest power rates in Canada. If that's true I'm glad I don't live where it's the most expensive.

Everybody that knows me can tell you where I'll be on Sunday night march 17. In front of the television watching Wrestlemania X8 live from Toronto. Some people call me crazy but I'm not the only express vu subscriber that'll be shelling out $44.99 to see the "The Rock" take on "Hollywood Hogan" or "thee" man "Nature Boy" Ric Flair take on the "Undertaker". Women watch soap operas and men watch Wrestling. In another wrestling note "Rowdy" Roddy Piper was seriously injured in car crash a couple of weeks ago. Although he did suffer life-threatening injuries he is on the road to recovery.

With Easter fast approaching here's an old groaner for you:

A man was blissfully driving along the highway, when he saw the Easter Bunny hopping across the middle of the road. He swerved to avoid hitting the Bunny, but unfortunately the rabbit jumped in front of his car and was hit. The basket of eggs went flying all over the place. Candy, too.

The driver, being a sensitive man as well as an animal lover, pulled over to the side of the road, and got out to see what had become of the Bunny carrying the basket. Much to his dismay, the colorful Bunny was dead.

The driver felt guilty and began to cry. A woman driving down the same highway saw the man crying on the side of the road and pulled over. She stepped out of her car and asked the man what was wrong.

"I feel terrible," he explained, "I accidentally hit the Easter Bunny and killed it. What should I do?"

The woman told the man not to worry. She knew exactly what to do. She went to her car trunk, and pulled out a spray can. She walked over to the limp, dead Bunny, and sprayed the entire contents of the can onto the little furry animal.

Miraculously the Easter Bunny came to back life, jumped up, picked up the spilled eggs and candy, waved its paw at the two humans and hopped on down the road. 50 yards away the Easter Bunny stopped, turned around, waved and hopped on down the road another 50 yards, turned, waved, hopped another 50 yards and waved again!!!!

The man was astonished. He said to the woman, "What in heaven's name is in your spray can?" The woman turned the can around so that the man could read the label. It said:

"Hair spray. Restores life to dead hair. Adds permanent wave."

An election is looming over the Harbour. So far only two candidates have tossed their names in the hat that I know of, T. James and Fred Murray. I suspect voter turnout will be very low if anything like the last municipal election in which I ran for Mayor and lost of course. Most people know Fred from his involvement with community groups. Terry is fairly well heard of too and I'm sure it will be close.

The Village will go to the Capital Borrowing board to look for funds to finally put up a new Fire Hall and apparently approval has already been put forth to apply next year for funding for a new fire truck. Both are needed desperately and it's unfortunate it took this long to look after these safety matter. It's going to cost a lot of money and I'm sure taxpayers will feel the effects. Things need to be looked after early and put on the back burner till it's too late and council had to find out this the hard way. Hopefully things won't be allowed to deteriorate so badly in the future and better planning will take place.
