April 9,2002 Column

Sorry there hasn’t been a column the last couple of weeks, but I’ve been extremely busy and frankly Blacks hasn’t been a hustle and bustle of activity. We did elect a new councilor and I think he will do a good job.

There was a new doctor down checking out the Health Center and surrounding areas. We should know soon whether he would be settling down here or not. There was a buzz about the news article regarding money granted to Nursing Homes in which Fundy Nursing home was granted the second largest amount. A good portion of that money has already been spent on upgrades.

On the topic of health care it’s interesting to note that no matter who you are the health care system will treat you the same and you’ll have to wait like everybody else. Prime Minister Jean Chretien's 90 year old brother spent 24 hours on a gurney in an emergency room hallway after being brought to the department by ambulance after suffering chest pains. The retired doctor was later released after several examinations.

Virtual Agent Services out of Illinois is now operating their call center in St. George. They’re employing over 30 people now with hopes of employing up to 75 in the future. They have 5 other call centers throughout the province including one in St. Andrews. There had been some rumors floating around about a call center coming to Blacks, but I thinks they’re just that; rumors.

Another rumor abound that I’ve been hearing a lot is that Allen and Wright Inc.are aggressively looking for someone with money to establish one of their famous A&W’s in the St. George area. They are looking to set up a number of franchises in New Brunswick and my sources say there have been a few nibbles regarding setting up a restaurant in the area. The only Question is where would they build it. St.George is getting pretty full in there.

The village council meeting could be a good one this week. I’ve heard there could be a lot of information coming out about funding or lack of for projects like the proposed new fire station and village office. We’ll have to wait and see.

In the “Reader” insert in this weekend’s telegraph journal paper there was an interesting article on the murder of Ms. Connors here in Blacks many years ago. The article was about a quest to find the lyrics to the song that was rumored to have been written about the event. After contacting several people they were able to piece it together. It was decided that this might be the final version:

The Connors Girl

In a little quiet village
lived a Connors girl one day,
living life, making friends,
with those who came her way.

Little did she know
when she started for the ball,
that her short life was ended
and she must leave them all.

Later that evening
as she went out through the door,
She met with an airman
she'd never met before.

He asked her to go walking
and she thought it was all right,
So they strolled along together
on a quiet summer night.

The ball went on and on
about an hour or more,
when someone saw the airman
come strolling through the door.

He did not stay so very long
but left the hall in haste,
When someone said, Hutchings
There's blood stains on your face.

When her parents missed her
they motored by the place
They searched the rocks and roadside
for the body of Bernice.

They found her broken body
on the seventh day of June,
This crime that he'd committed
won't be forgotten soon.

Once more they searched the
roadside for they must find a clue
They took along the bloodhounds
for they knew what to do.

Now they've found the murderer,
for his crime he'll have to pay,
For the crime that he committed
on this unforgotten day.

So ladies take my warning,
take this warning now from me.
Don't go to midnight dances
or keep bad company.

Now you've heard my story
take warning young and old
Never let your children stray
or wander from the fold.

It may not be your loved ones,
to be the next to fall
So be ready for the Master
When He makes his final call.

I thought this was an interesting story and if anyone has anything they would like to add please e-mail me.

Over the next couple of months villagers will see a new vessel sailing into the harbor as the MV Nada will be replacing the Grand Manan V during its refit between April 12 and May 12.
