An Activist's Guide to Mass Media
To use the media properly, you must use the right tool for the right job.
While Television and newspapers will reach the largest
audience, but normally, it's
much easier to get on a local station, so you can get a
large segment of the population in a small area. This can
be quite useful in getting the local politicians to
act like human beings. It worked well for us in pressuring the
government into opening a homeless shelter,
despite politicians who saw it as a threat to property values.
Radio will get you alot of exposure,
although it's low tech, it can reach thousands, and is much
easier to get on. If you know someone who has a program on a small
or college station it's easy to get on. You may want to host a radio
program yourself. Then there's talk radio, but be prepared to wait
an hour before they put you on.
If you believe you're in the right, and also believe that other
human beings aren't too different from yourself, then all we need
to do is communicate to make the nessessary changes.
Everything for activists!
