April Meetings:

All meetings held at Heather Farms Garden Center, 1540 March Banks Dr., Walnut Creek. 7:00 – 10:00 PM

April 2 nd  -  Basic and Intermediate Class Joint Meeting (7:00 pm to 7:30 pm) - Business meeting and library open(7:30 pm to 8:00 pm); Class instruction - Topics are how to pinch new growth, feeding and watering; Workshop (8:0 pm to 10:00 pm).

April 9th Intermediate Class (7:00 pm to 7:30 pm) Business meeting and library open; (7:30pm to 8:00 pm) Class Instruction - Discussion on the Problems of branch development; (8:30 pm to 10:00 pm) Workshop.

April 3rd -  Board of Directors Meeting at 7:30 at the CalFed Bank on Crow Canyon in San Ramon

          Notes: - (1) If your are listed to bring refreshments and cannot attend, please call Bob Evans at (925)-820-0268.

             -  (2) Don't forget to bring a piece of plastic to cover your table during the workshop.  After the workshop, clean-up around your table and help put away the tables and chairs. (two rows of tables and chairs at the south end of the room.)

           -  (3) Wear your name tags to class every month to make it easier for everyone to meet each other.  If you need a name tag, call Bob Evans (925)-820-0268 to order one.  The cost is $2.00.

April 21 & 22 - Cherry Blossom Festival Bonsai Exhibit  -  in the Sakura Room of the Miyako Hotel on Geary Street in San Francisco (Japan town).  Hours are 10:00 am to 5:00pm both days.  This year there will be demonstrations as a part of the exhibit.  On Saturday there will be two demonstrations 11:00 am to 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm to 3:30 pm by Hiro Suzuki.  On Sunday our Sensei Kunitoshi Akabane will do the demonstration from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Setup of the exhibit will be on Friday night April 20 starting at 6:00pm.

We have seven more books of raffle tickets to sell for the Cherry Blossom Festival.  Tickets will be available during the business meetings on April 2nd and 9th.  The cost of the tickets is $2.00.  You do not have to be present to win.  The club keeps $2.00 for each book of tickets sold.

Club News

At the March joint meeting, a sign-up sheet was passed around for volunteers at the Cherry Blossom Exhibit on Saturday and Sunday.  The sheet didn't get back to Bob Evans, so please give him a call and let Bob know who signed up and for when.  The times were Saturday 10:00 am to 1:00 pm, 1:00 pm to 3:00pm and 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm.  Sunday 10>00pm to 1:00 pm.  Two people are needed for each shift.  If you have a club Happi Coat, please wear it at thee exhibit so the public will know you are a participant and can ask you questions.

The Jon Naka Bonsai Techniques Volume 1 was borrowed for the library and has not been returned.  If you have the book, please bring it to one of the April meetings or give Pat Hines 944-1246 or Linda Soliven (925)-934-2875 a call.

The two potting sessions for the year have now been held and if you did not attend one of them and need pots to do your donation trees for the October Show plant trees, give Bob Evans a v\call at (925)-830-0268.  

Our thanks to K Masako Akabane for hosting our two potting sessions, providing coffee and Tea and making their nursery and staff available for our use.  Also thanks to Mineko Montoya for bringing refreshments to the potting sessions.

Please welcome the following new members that joined the club in March:  John Dommes of Danville, Lois Naye of Walnut Creek , Ed Justus of Orinda and Robert Tafelski, Jr of Concord.

The remaining pots and one of the stands from the estate of Phil Hermann were sold a the March joint meeting.  The club was able to send a check in the amount of $427 to his wife.  We wish to thank the members, who made purchases for their generous support.  The remaining stand will be a special raffle item at the October Show.

April 14, 15 - American Bonsai Associations of Sacramento Annual Spring Show and Sale at Mckinley Park Garden & Arts Center, 3330 McKinley Blvd, Sacramento.  Hours are 10:00 am to 5:00pm both days.  Demonstration by Kathy Shaner  at 2:00 pm both days.

April 21-22  -  San Jose Betsuin Bonsai Club 31st Annual Spring Bonsai Exhibit at the San Jose Buddhist Church Betsuin, 640 North Fifth Street, San Jose, CA.  Hours Saturday  12:00 noon to 5:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am to 4:00 pm.  Demonstrations both days at 2:00 pm by "Mr. California Juniper", Harry Hirao.

April 21, 22 - Bonsai Sekiyu Kai 24th Annual Show, "Maple, Queen of Bonsai" at Sacramento Buddhist Church Hall, 2401 Riverside Blvd, Sacramento.   Hours are Saturday 12:00 noon to 6:00 pm and Sunday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Demonstration by John Uchida at 2:00  pm both days.

April 21, 22 - Kusamura Bonsai Club's 41st Annual Show at Mitchell Park Community Center, 3800 Middlefield Rd, Palo Alto.  Hours are: Saturday, 12:00 non to 5:00 pm and Sunday 11:00 am to 5:00 pm.  Demonstration Saturday by Kathy Shaner at 1:30 pm and Sunday by Sandy Planting and Jim Ransohoff at 1:30 pm.
