Apple Kuchen

Dough:

  1. Soften yeast in warm water.
  2. Combine scalded milk, sugar, shortening, and salt. Cool to lukewarm.
  3. Add 1 cup of flour; beat well.
  4. Beat in softened yeast and egg.
  5. Gradually add remaining flour, beating well.
  6. Cover and let rise in warm place until double in volume. (1 1/2 to 2 hours.)

Topping:

  1. Peel and slice apples (thin slices, 1/4" thickness at most).
  2. Mix together sugar, cinnamon, and flour. Work in butter.
  3. Place now-risen dough on lightly-greased cookie sheet. Pat out as for pizza (don't roll). Dough should be 1/4" thick, perhaps a bit more, but not thicker than 1/2".
  4. Arrange apples in rows, pressing lightly into dough.
  5. Spread sugar-cinnamon mix over apples.
  6. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.
