"Here rest the remains of William A. Samson, age 22 years, and Robert Edes Bradshaw, age 21 years, both of Charleston, Massachusetts. They were cruelly murdered at the Chili Gulch, July 18, 1851. By three Mexican assassins, for the sake of gold. This simple memorial to two beloved and worthy sons is raised by their parents, who in homes far distant mourn their sad and untimely fate." This monument is now missing. |

CAMANCHE STORY:… The oldest known grave site, located on the South Bank of the Mokelumne River opposite China Gulch, bore the date 1852. Three persons were buried there: Rose, Williams, and Briley. No one knows why all three persons were cut short in the prime of life between Sep 5 and 12, 1852, nor why they were buried close together with a common headstone. No living relatives have been found, but East Bay Water disinterred the bodies and provided a new resting place outside the reservour area." |
