REALISTIC DREAMS
ST. ANDREW'S CATHOLIC CHURCH
It was so perfect.
I look out into the pews and find my mother and sister sitting together in the
first row. Never in my life would I have thought I would be able to see this
happen. Guess that what's make's this such a wonderful fantasy. My attention
turns to the left side of the room and I see my future mother-in-law smiling
brightly as tears of joy stream down her face. Sometimes I wonder how she was
able to survive everything life has thrown her way. I smile back at her before
making eye contact with the man sitting beside her. Her oldest son and my
soon-to-be brother-in-law.
He doesn't smile but instead looks at me with a respect I never thought was
possible. We've never been close or good buddies or anything but, because of his
sister, we have come to an equal understanding. Next to him sits his lovely wife
and their two, giggling children. It's overwhelming to think that I'll be
accepting these people as part of my own family today.
Behind mine and my future wife's families sits our closest friends and
colleagues. Though they are rather small in number, the love they give us is
more than a thousand friends could show.
I glance to my left to find my brother-in-law grinning at me and then at my
sister. Of course, I know exactly what they're grinning about because if it
wasn't for them I probably wouldn't be experiencing a dream like this right now.
If only it hadn't taken so long for our reunion...
Suddenly the music starts and I see my 5 and
7-year-old nieces walking hand-in-hand down the aisle, leaving flower petals in
their wake. The littler one, who looks just like her mother with long, wavy,
black hair and big blue eyes, gets excited and begins pegging some of the guests
who find it absolutely adorable. Once they get to the altar, their baskets
empty, they quickly scurry to my sister's side full of pride and "little-girl"
giggles.
The air seems to rush out of my lungs as I watch the congregation rise and turn
to face the doors. The bridal anthem begins and my angel comes into sight.
I can't believe this is actually happening.
She is dressed in a traditional white gown complete with veil and train. Her
shoulder-length hair is shiny and sets off her eyes perfectly. But it's not her
clothes or hair that shows her true beauty.
It's her smile.
There were so many times I thought I'd never again be able to see that smile.
But now, today, that smile and the woman who wears it will be mine to cherish
until death do we part.
My heart speeds up triple time as she is guided down the aisle towards me, my
face feeling as though it will break if my own smile gets any bigger. If someone
had told me five years ago, that I would be about to marry the most wonderful
woman I've ever met in my life I would laugh outright in their face. But things
are different now.
The man giving her away, our former boss and a man I now trust with my life,
grins warmly at me as he places her hand in mine. "Take good care of her. She's
one of the best."
"Thank you, sir."
My bride and I share one more smile before turning to face the priest. He goes
through the traditional wedding vows and when he asks if there is anyone who
feels we should not be married I get completely petrified. I know my dream is
fixing to end.
However, the priest notices my anxiousness and lays a hand on my shoulder.
"It's okay, my son. It's just part of the proceedings."
I try to smile reassuringly up at him that "I'm fine" when I hear my bride
whisper "He has a tendency to be paranoid, Father," to which he (and the people
around us) find humorous.
The rest of the ceremony went on without a hitch and the next thing I knew...
"Do you, Fox William Mulder, take this woman as your lawfully wedded wife; to
have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for richer for
poorer, in sickness and in health, to love, honor, and cherish, for as long as
you both shall live?"
I, once again, turn to face her with a slight smirk on my face as I gaze down
into her tear-filled, blue eyes. "I do."
She awards me with that smile and the droplets fall freely down her face.
"And do you, Dana Katherine Scully, take this man to be your lawfully wedded
husband; to have and to hold from this day forward, for better for worse, for
richer for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and obey for as long as
you both shall live?"
"I do."
I feel warm moisture flowing down my face and she reaches her hand up to wipe
the tears away.
"I love you, Mulder."
"I love you, too, Scully."
I can hear the church erupt in "awe's" mixed with laughter over the fact that we
still call each other by our last names.
The priest looks to the Best Man. "Do you have the rings?"
He digs into his jacket pocket and pulls out a small, grey, velvet box
containing the 2 wedding bands.
"With this ring, I thee wed..."
After we exchange rings, the priest smiles warmly at us. "I now pronounce you,
husband and wife."
Then, finally the moment I've been waiting my whole life for...
"You may kiss the bride."
THE END!
