Skyway's Tuffwheels
Skyway's Tuff Wheels
Brand New 16" Freewheel Tuffs
Skyway's Tuffwheels were the choice mag wheel in the late 70's and through the 1980's.  There were also a few other mag wheels made of some sort of metal/alloy but the Skyway mags were the favorite composite wheel.  On the left is a set of Tuff I's, Tuff II's had a large metal star/flange that went from the hub to the rim and there was also the short lived Graphite Tuffs which were black with a gold flange.

The best way to ID a Skyway Tuffwheel is to remove the tire and look inside the rim.  Some of the wheels will still have writing there which indicates the date.  I believe the last two digits are the year in most cases.  The hot-stamped numbers on the oldest wheels are referenced in Skyway's archived files for quality control.  Look for Skyway in raised letters on the rim itself between the spokes where they meet the rim.  You can try and send some email to Skyway for any identification answers.
Currently 20" Tuffwheels are available in single-speed hub only.  The gearing option for 24" Tuffs is single, or ready to accept a five gear cassette.  Skyway does not make anything in a 26" wheel.
