Weimaraner Books

Some of these may be available in local libraries or bookstores.

The Weimaraner, Scott, Jack Denton, Fawcett-Dearing, Louisville, 1953 (out of print).
This is the oldest known book about the Weimaraner and is extremely rare. Contains such gems as articles from early Argosy and Field and Stream magazines about the Weimaraner in the U. S. Of inestimable value is the discussion of the earliest theories of the origins of the breed. Also includes the complete text of the first accepted U.S. Standard and the rejected 1949 version of the standard. Excerpts from several of the first issues of The Weimaraner Magazine.

The Complete Weimaraner, Denlinger, William W., Richmond, Denlinger's, 1954 (out of print).
This is the second oldest book known in the U.S. about the Weimaraner. Occasionally copies may be available at rare book dealers or at dog shows. An excellent book to understand the origin of the breed in Germany and the spread to North America. Many old photos.

How to Raise and Train A Weimaraner, Liebers, Arthur & Paul Jeffries, Sterling Pub. Co., Inc., New York, 1959. (out of print).
A small book with a simple overview of the breed history, characteristics and some training hints.

This Is the Weimaraner, Hart, Ernest H., Jersey City, NJ, T.F.H. Publications, Inc., 1965. (out of print)
Another out-of-print book that is occasionally found at book dealers specializing in pet books. Many photos of the great dogs that are the foundation of most of today’s lines. While not completely unbiased (or maybe accurate) in all respects, worthwhile as a history of the breed.

Guide to the Weimaraner, Burgoin, Gillian, Dog World Books, 1985.
A more current book. The focus is on England and Europe. Some unique features are translations of German documents and terms, British standards, registrations, regulations, and a photo gallery of British champions.

The Weimaraner, Nicholas, Anna K., TFH Publications, Inc., 1986.
The book has less history and more on the current state of the breed. The first with color photos, Long haired Weimaraners are discussed with fair objectivity. Also discusses Weimaraners in Hawaii, Canada, Australia, England, and South Africa.

Weimaraner Ways, Alexander, Virgina and Jackie Isabell, SunStar, 1994
The definitive and seminal book. Although fairly expensive, this book is a bargain for anyone serious about the breed and is a must have. The most in-depth study of the breed and its history to date, the book is fascinating reading from cover to cover. No shading of the truth.

The Essential Weimaraner, Hollings, Patsy, Howell Book House, 1996
The most recently published book, this worldwide look at the breed was published in England. The final chapter on the North American Weimaraner is interesting and comprehensive and was written by Judy Colan, a long-time American Weimaraner breeder and judge.

The New Owner’s Guide to Weimaraners, Coffman, Judythe, T.F.H. Dog Books, 1998
Newly released, this book by a long time owner, exhibitor, breeder and judge includes invaluable information that potential Weimaraner owners need to know about vaccines, nutrition, finding a reputable breeder, and training.

These were compiled by local clubs in service to the breed
