History

Shortly after Ted Grant was born, his father Henry pledged that Ted would not be a fragile child as he had been, nor would Ted be afraid of life. Henry trained Ted in sports and self-defense from infancy.

After Ted's parents died, he was left penniless due to their debts. He sought work without success until he helped heavyweight champion "Socker" Smith fight off a pair of hold up men. Smith gave Grant a job as one of his sparing partners, and very soon Grant became a great success as a professional boxer himself. The same men Flint and Skinner managed both men. Finally, there was a championship fight between Smith and Grant. To "fix" the fight so that Grant would win, Flint and Skinner had Grant's second, Fain, slip a poisoned needle into Smith's boxing glove. The plan was for the poison to render Smith unconscious when Grant hit him. Fain however put too much poison on the needle and Smith was killed. Grant was accused of murdering Smith, and Flint and Skinner tried unsuccessfully to kill Grant so he wouldn't accuse them.

Hearing a young boy talk about Green Lantern inspired Grant to become a costumed "mystery man" Wildcat to bring Smith's killers to justice. Wildcat forced Flint and Skinner, and Fian to confess, and Ted Grant's name was cleared.

Grant continued this career as Wildcat. He joined the Wartime All-Star Squadron and worked briefly with the Justice Society of America.

Years later Grant retired from boxing as undefeated world heavyweight champion. He was a regular member of the JSA after its revival in the 1970's.
