DENGUE KILLS 2, DOWNS 110

Naga City. Dengue, that dreaded malaise caused by daylight biting Aedes egypti mosquitoes, has claimed the lives of two persons in Camarines Sur and has inflicted 110 others who are now reported to be recuperating in various hospitals in Naga City.

In the last five months persons suspected of dengue have been reported and to have come from the towns of San Fernando, Ragay, Pamplona, Pasacao, Presentacion, Canaman, Ocampo, Bula and Naga City, all in the province of Camarines Sur.

Dr. Josefina G. Cereno, Provincial Health Officer I of the Department of Health (DOH) indicated that the currently reported number of dengue cases have increased by about 30 percent compared with reported cases for the same quarter in 1997. Cases were reported from the various hospitals in the province and the three major hospitals in Naga City.

Dr. Cereno identified the rice-producing town of San Fernando as the hardest hit of this recent dengue onslaught, with most of the afflicted patients being school-age children believed to have been bitten by the dengue-carrying mosquitoes in their school premises.

Meanwhile, in this city, Health Officer II Dr. Vito Borja ordered the fogging of several school buildings after some 16 patients were brought to the city’s hospitals last month. The areas where the fogging was already done were in sitio San Rafael of barangay Cararayan; barangays Igualdad, Concepcion Pequeña, Liboton and Abella. Naga Monday Star
