Good question! Read on!
Back to the HOME page...
* Circle K is an international collegiate community service organization - the college version of Kiwanis. It is the college level of the Kiwanis Family, which includes the many different Kiwanis Clubs around the world, K-Kids at the elementary school level, Builders Club at middle and junior high schools, Key Club and KIWIN'S at the high school level, and even KiwaJunior in Europe!
* I first joined Builders Club back in 1991, as a lost and confused seventh-grader. I served as President of the club in my second year there, and then as Secretary the next year. Builders Club led to Key Club, which was bigger and better than I had ever imagined. I served a term as Secretary there at Patrick Henry High School, and then became the Lieutenant Governor of Division 21 the very next year!! =) That was one of the most exciting experiences I have ever had. Three amazing Conventions, and literally THOUSANDS of fabulous and interesting people to work with. So of course, upon graduating from high school, I just HAD to join Circle K. How could I not? Why wouldn't I want to? I really believe that Circle K offers some of the very most rewarding opportunities available to a college student today.
* Of course, the MAIN purpose of all this is not socialization or scholarship opportunities, or some of those other benefits that come along with membership. The real reason we join the club is SERVICE. Sure, the phrase "community service" is sometimes associated with a criminal sentence, but if you volunteer your time and efforts, community service can be a fun way to spend some time. And the feeling you get that you're somehow making a difference - it feels pretty good ya know.
* I recently had to step down as Circle K's Cal-Nev-Ha District Governor. For more information, CLICK HERE. Even despite this setback, my spirit for service and my commitment to the organization remain unbroken. I have developed a greater understanding of leadership, and a greater appreciation for the CORE VALUES of the organization. There are certain prominent people within the organization at this time whose values are more selfish than charitable, and whose motivation for membership in Circle K is questionable at best. While I will not name names, I would advise people to consider the true qualifications and true intentions of a candidate before electing future representatives. It is my belief that certain individuals currently in elected positions do not reflect well upon a non-political service organization dedicated to selflessly helping others...
* SDSU Circle K meets each week on campus at SDSU (5:30pm, Quetzalcoatl room, Aztec Center every MONDAY) - stop by and say hello! (If you are an SDSU student interested in more detailed information about Circle K, e-mail me at L10John@hotmail.com.)
