Eddie Doyle in 'BACKWATER'

BACKWATER
Eddie Doyle Played By James Downer In The Mostly Irish Production July 17,18 1998

1 DO you think she'll have any objections to us.

2 MAYBE YOU should have written and told her.

4 STILLl... walking ;in on top of her like this without warning...

5 STILL it's pretty place . Fine river and plenty trees. Mountains as well, not far off...
I can't remember wren I've seen a place as nice.

6 I DON'T know .
Its the sort of place that appeals to me. Nice and peaceful. That a good-looking river.
If here's one thing I love it's A quiet inland place.

7 IS London the world?

8 OF course you have. I shouldn't have asked.

9 THERE'S one thing I want to make clear now Jimmy.
If we stay here we pay our way,
at least Sammy and me.

10 LET us have our way in this one.
It's want we want.

11 FAIR enough.

12 THAT'S good idea when you think of it.

13 YOU'RE sure your mother won't take a dim view of us?

14 WHATEVER you say.

14 NO thanks. I'm full.

15 I hope it's alight ?

16 OUR staying here I mean

17 NO.. It's not like home.

18 NO he's not. It's just that the money is so good.

19 IF he could get a decent job he'd be back in the morning

20 SAMMY was reared in a Irish orphanage.

21 THEY'RE both dead.

22 THE sea's a cruel mistress. I never liked her.
I like quiet places inland where the water's fresh and predictable.

23 JUST looking at water will suit me fine from now on.

24 YES. I thought of it. But somehow I just could never seem to get going in that direction.
It's a wonder you never married again?

25 YOU'D be surprised

26 I'M amazed you never married again.

27 IN your case that could never be true

28 IT sounds a great life to me.

29 THAT'S true. It's like Mrs. Swan just said.. it all dependents on what a person wants. I don't want the same thing as you nor Sammy doesn't want the same as me. The tough part is that not all people get what they want. I suppose that's as it should be. If man want something simple and good most likely he can have it in due course but if he wants to much he may end up with nothing at all.

30 ALRIGHT you two. that's enough clowning.
They're always at that sort of thing. It come of being too much in the city.

31 YOU'RE not goIng without your mother?

32 OF COURSE. In case the boys grow tied of waiting and want to visit the other pubs I'll hang on next door .

33 I DON'T mind. I like to stay in one place.

34 NO thanks you.
It keeps me awake.
I haven't drunk so much since my Twenty first birthday.
Still I enjoyed the night.
The boys were in their element.

35 WHY don't you call me Eddie.
I'm not used to being called mister.
It sort of embarrasses me.

36 I'D like that.
To answer your question, they cut it up on week-ends alight.
But otherwise no.

37 ALRIGHT, if you will.

38 NO, I don't think so
Sit down and tell me about the village.

39 GO on.

40 JIMMY used to say the place was dying.

41 I'VE only spent a week here and already I love the place.
I've seen a lot of things I like.
The village folk are friendly and easy going.
There's so little noise.
You know yesterday was the first time I heard a cock crow in twenty years.

42 I COULD stay forever.

48 IT'S the truth.

49 I'M NOT saying there aren't.
I suppose when you come to think of it there must be places which are even prettier.
If you want to know the chief reason I like the place is because you live here.

50 I DO.

51 THAT'S where you're wrong.
Since I met Jimmy five years ago I've known you.
He had your photograph propped up on his dressing table- you and Jimmy on his Confirmation Day.
Well he showed it to us and even then, that time, I saw something in. your face that made me want to come here.

52 DON'T say anything.
Anyway I held on to the photograph as good while and when he put his wallet back he forgot to ask me for it so I kept it and every so often for the past five years I look at it.
I suppose you could say I stole it.
Never stole anything else in my life.
I never saw anything worth stealing.

53 IT'S the truth.
I'm not good at chatting up women.

54 SHE was special.

55 YES.

56 IT'S all over now, just a memory.

56 NO

57 IT ISN'T.
The reason I kept the photograph was the I fell in love with you.
I never thought I'd be saying this to you
It's like a dream.
It's almost unreal.

58 YOU can love a person in a photograph.

59 WE both know that makes no difference.

60 I STILL have the photograph.

61 ONLY a little.

62 WILL you consider my proposal?

63 DON'T you even like me?

64 I DIDN'T do much for you.

65 YOU can't make a person do something unless he wants to.

66 NOBODY forced him to come.

67 HE came because he wanted to.

68 NOW, now, that not true.

69 I WISH you wouldn't cry.

70PLEASE don't cry
I'll be here...No matter what I'll be here.
You must NEVER again feel you'll be alone.

71 WE had a walk. We went right down by the river.

72 WE must have done three miles all told, that would be going and coming.

73 NOT particularly just that he always the last to go to bed.

74 VERY nice. Saw a salmon leaping in the big poll near the Sally Grove.
Must've been twenty pounds.

75 LET see now...
Water was nice.
Clear as crystal.
Oh, yes, we saw an otter swimming a good way off.
You know where the bend is?.. well it was right there
. Now that I come to think of it a flight of swans went by.
By Jove make some noise, don't they? I don't recall much else.

76 THAT'S about as much as I recall offhand.
We met some folks from the village, friends of your mother and there were some children tossing stones from the bridge.
What's all the questions for anyway.

77 YES I have.

78 IT'S been above board.

79 ACTULLY I meant to speak to you about that this VERY night.

80 YES, I did but I think your mother would like to be here.
I'll call her in.

81 MARY... would you step ;in a moment please.

82 IT'S been Mary right from the beginning.

83 YES, she does.

84 CALLING each other by our Christian names.
What's slinky about that.

85 I thought it better.

86 NOT yet.

87 YES. I'd better.

88 I WON'T be going back to England with you chaps in the morning.
I'll be staying on here.

89 YOUR mother and I intend to get married.

90 WHY not?

91 WHAT has that got to do with it?

92 SEE here ...

93 VERY well... if that's what you want.

THE END
