Johnathan's Story

Hi, my name is Gena, and I would like to share my story with you.

On Mother's day of 1996 my husband and I found out we were pregnant. It was a great day for us. We call the Doctor the very next day to make the appointments for a Prenatal visit. We were excited. Of course I was going to start eating right, I did not smoke; I was very healthy. I had all the tests and everything came back "Normal" The day finally comes along and Johnathan Christopher Paul was born. About six hours later we were told the news that Johnathan had Down Syndrome. By the way, did I tell you my husbands and myself age? We were both 21 when we had Johnathan.

At that time I was not allowed to see Johnathan. I was unable to see him for 8 hours after he was born. At the time the Doctor advised us that it would be best to not hold him and said that we should leave him at the hospital and that the state would take him as a "ward of the state." After telling the Doctor that I don't think so, I carried this little boy for 9 months and I would like to feed him now, the doctor still advised my husband that we really should leave him there. My husband looked at him and said I do believe that Gena (me) said that she is going to take him home and please don't ask us again to leave him here, he only has an extra chromosome so what? He is going to be slow. We don't care; we loved him from the moment we found out we were carrying a gift from God.

Johnathan is now a 2 1/2 little boy who has proven a lot of doctors wrong. He does the normal 2 year old things. He runs, talks, sleeps, eats, and gives you the biggest hugs and kisses around!

I hope you enjoyed our story! It is an on-going story. A very special angel was sent to us. We named him before he arrived: Johnathan Christopher Paul. We had no idea at the time he really was an angel! His name means: Johnathan- "Gift from God", Christopher- "Christ bearing", Paul - "Little" one.
