Dinah Washington LPs with Maynard Ferguson

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH JAMS -- EmArcy MG 36000

This LP is a classic EmArcy recording of Dinah Washington with Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson, recorded at a live jam session in Los Angeles on 8/14/54. The LP was released early in 1955. Hey, I was alive and one year old at the time, and living in a suburb of L.A. Why didn't my parents take me to see this concert? Regardless of my lack of personal involvement, this is one of the CLASSIC jazz recordings of ALL TIME!!! Maynard's solo effort on "Summertime" alone is worth the price of the LP! It lists for $50.00 in NMINT condition. Some copies have the word "Jams" in pink on the front cover, and others have it in green.
COPY #1. Just in, I found this copy at a record show. The cover has the green "Jams" on the front cover. The front and back of the cover are in outstanding condition -- really nice for this 46-year-old LP. The edges of the cover do show some of the typical brown toning that occurs on these EmArcy LPs, but it's not too bad. I did take the liberty of making a repair to a 4" spine split at bottom right. Given most copies of this LP that I've seen, this is one of the nicer covers. I'll call it EX+. The vinyl is not the best. It's got a lot of fine surface scratches and scuffs. It plays fairly well, but there's definite background noise due to the fine scratches. It' just VG-, at best. Overall, let's call this copy VG+. Due to the nice cover, it's slightly better than average, overall. Just $7.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH JAMS -- Nippon Phonogram EXPR-1013

This LP is a Japanese re-issue pressing of the classic EmArcy recording of Dinah Washington with Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson, recorded at a live jam session in Los Angeles on 8/14/54. Next to the 1955 original (EmArcy MG 36000), this is one of the best ways to get a copy of this LP, because the Japanese pressings are OUTSTANDING! The cover art is almost identical to the original.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy at first looks to be NMINT+, but if you look at it in just the right light, you can see where some sticker damage has been repaired in the upper right-hand corner of the front cover. Still, it's a NMINT- to NMINT cover. The vinyl has a few surface scratches, so only rates an EX-. Too bad. This normally $30.00+ album rates just an EX+ overall, and is priced at just $7.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this copy has just the faintest hint of record ring wear. It's very minimal, but does bear mention. Still, it's a NMINT cover, in fabulous condition. The vinyl is NMINT, as well. Overall, it's a super nice and clean NMINT copy. $14.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has just a bit of record ring wear, but it's minimal. The cover is still NMINT. The vinyl is likewise a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this one is in NMINT condition, and it's $14.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH JAMS 1954 -- Trip Jazz TLP-5500

This LP is a 1970s re-issue pressing of the classic EmArcy recording of Dinah Washington with Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson, recorded at a live jam session in Los Angeles on 8/14/54. Trip Jazz put out these great re-issue pressings because the originals are so hard to find. They're really outstanding pressings. If you can't find the original from 1955, this is a great substitute. Plus, it's going to sound better than the 1955 version due to the advances in pressing technology. The covers on these are black, so most copies will have surface or record ring wear.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has the original owner's name written on both the front and back, as well as a personnel listing taped to the back cover. This reduces the cover to just VG. The vinyl is VG+ to EX-. So this is a somewhat rough copy. Just $2.00 if you buy anthing else from me. Otherwise, it's $3.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one is super -- NMINT! The vinyl is NMINT, as well. A beautiful, highly-collectible, NMINT copy. $12.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one would be NMINT, but there's a bend in the upper left-hand corner. Thus, to be conservative, I'd only rate it at EX++. The vinyl is NMINT. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $10.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this copy has just the faintest hint of record ring wear. Still, it rates a NMINT- to NMINT, as it's almost flawless. The vinyl is NMINT, as well. Overall, a super NMINT- to NMINT copy. $11.00.
COPY #5. The cover on this copy looks like it was just taken out of the shrink wrap. You just don't see these black covers without ring wear, and in the splendid condition this one's in. It's NMINT+. The vinyl is pristine -- NMINT+. This one actually was in my private collection until I just recently put a FS copy there. It's a pristine NMINT+ copy. $14.00.
COPY #6. Already I already have several copies in stock, I just couldn't pass up this nice copy. The cover is ultra clean and nice, with just a tiny little wrinkle or two in the bottom left-hand corner, visible only from the front. Still, it's a pristine cover. NMINT to NMINT+. The vinyl is really pristine. NMINT+. Overall, this is a super copy, in NMINT to NMINT+ condition. $12.00.
COPY #7. This one was still in the original shrink wrap, but I removed it because it was torn, and it revealed a pristine cover, EXCEPT that the upper right corner has been trimmed off -- a cut-out item. This reduces an otherwise NMINT+ cover to just EX. The vinyl looks like it was played once -- NMINT+. Overall, this one is NMINT-. Due to the cut cover, just $5.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH! (U.K. RELEASE) -- Fontana FJL125 (683 275 JCL)

This LP is really interesting. It's got four tunes from the 8/14/54 Jam Session in Los Angeles: Love Come Back to Me, Come Rain or Come Shine, There is No Greater Love, and You Go to My Head. The cover is totally unique. It's got a young man and woman sitting on the floor, back to back, obviously listening to Dinah and smiling. He's smoking a cigarette. To the best of my knowledge, this is a U.K.-only LP. I've never seen anything like it in the U.S. There are also four other tracks by Dinah on the LP, but MF does not play on those tracks. Really an interesting and unique LP, and it would look great in any MF collection.
COPY #1. The front cover on this copy is almost like new, and looks fabulous! The back cover does show some record ring and surface wear, but there's no other problems. I'd rate this cover as EX++. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT- to NMINT. A super copy, and ultra rare. I've never seen one before except for the one in my personal collection. This one is $23.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, THE COMPLETE DINAH WASHINGTON, VOL. 12, 1954 (DANISH IMPORT) -- Official 3040

This LP is a 1989 re-issue of six tracks from the classic EmArcy recording of Dinah Washington with Clark Terry, Clifford Brown, and Maynard Ferguson, recorded at a live jam session in Los Angeles on 8/14/54. It's imported from Copenhagen, Denmark. The vinyl is oustanding, and the cover is well-designed, on highly glossy stock. The tracks include You Go to My Head, Lover Come Back to Me, Come Rain or Come Shine, Crazy He Calls Me, There is No Greater Love, and I'll Remember April. These are next to impossible to find here in the U.S.
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is almost like new, in NMINT++ condition!!! The vinyl is likewise NMINT to NMINT+. A beautiful copy, almost like new. $15.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH! -- EmArcy MG-36065

This LP features the Hal Mooney Orchestra on the classic EmArcy album entitled "Dinah!" Exact personnel for this session are unknown, but the Mercury folks say that probable personnel included Maynard Ferguson on the tracks Ill Wind, All of Me, More Than You Know, There'll Be Some Changes Made, Willow Weep for Me, Make Me a Present of You, I Could Have Told You, and Accent On Youth, recorded November 11 and 12, 1955. Trust me, you'll believe that Maynard could be in this orchestra when you hear not only the fantastic vocalizing of Dinah Washington, but also the tight, screaming trumpet section on a number of passages. It's fantastic big band vocalizing! This record lists for $50.00 in NMINT condition.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH! -- Nippon Phonogram EXPR-1036

This LP is a Japanese re-issue of the classic 1956 "Dinah!" album. The cover art is almost identical to the original. These Japanese pressings are superb -- beautifully mastered, and pressed on outstanding vinyl. They will almost always sound better than the originals, which were pressed in the U.S. in the mid-50s.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has just a bit of surface wear, but it's relatively minor. I'd rate it conservatively as NMINT-. (Dealers would call it NMINT, without hesitation.) The vinyl is NMINT to NMINT+ -- looks never-played. Overall, this copy is NMINT. $12.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this copy is almost flawless. If you look very carefully, you can see just the slightest hint of ring wear about to start. Still, it's easily NMINT. The vinyl is NMINT+! Overall, this is a great, NMINT to NMINT+ copy. $14.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one looks brand new, and even has the original paper "obi" strip still on the cover. It's NMINT+. The vinyl is the likewise NMINT+. Dealers would call this copy MINT. I'll call it NMINT+. $18.00. BEAUTIFUL!
COPY #4. Identical to COPY #3 above, this is a nearly flawless, NMINT+ copy, with original "obi" strip. $18.00.
COPY #5. The cover on this one is nearly perfect, except on the back, the original owner wrote his name in small letters at the top, and made a faint notation next to two tracks. Why do people do this??? This reduces a NMINT+ cover to just EX++. The vinyl has some scuffing and light surface scratches. It's EX. Overall, this copy is EX+. Just $7.00.
COPY #6. Looking at the front cover, I thought I would be rating this one MINT condition. Stunning. But on the back cover there is extensive writing. This reduces a MINT cover to just EX. The vinyl is the same. The actual vinyl appears to be MINT, but there's writing on both labels, reducing the record to just EX, as well. Overall, this one is EX. Due to the writing, it's just $5.00.
COPY #7. The cover on this one looks almost brand new -- NMINT++. The vinyl is MINT, NEVER PLAYED. Overall, this one is NMINT+++ -- a near perfect copy. It's $18.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, THE ORIGINAL SOUL SISTER, DINAH WASHINGTON, QUEEN OF THE BLUES -- Mercury Wing SRW 16386

This LP is an electronically remastered version of the classic 1956 "Dinah!" album. It is in simulated STEREO. Unlike other versions of the LP, two tracks are missing -- There'll Be Some Changes Made and Accent on Youth. The grooves on a STEREO record are wider than MONO, at least at the time this was produced, so two tracks had to be eliminated to make the rest fit on the record. Unfortunately, both those tracks include MF, but still, this is a very nice album.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has just a tiny bit of surface wear, but it's actually hard to find. I'd rate it conservatively as NMINT. (Dealers would call it NMINT, without hesitation.) The vinyl is NMINT on Side 1 and EX on Side 2. Overall, this copy is in the EX+ to NMINT- range. It's $12.00.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, FOR JAZZ LOVERS -- EmArcy MG-36086

This LP is an EmArcy compilation album from 1956. Included is the track "More Than You Know," from the "Dinah!" LP, on which MF is one of the probable personnel. This LP lists for $40.00 in NMINT condition.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has some small, cloudy-looking circles appearing under the laminate. There is a little bit of brown toning around the edges. Overall, I think it's just slightly better than an average cover, VG+. The vinyl isn't too bad, with just a few surface scuffs -- EX to EX+. It clearly the original with the silver drummer label. Overall, this copy is EX-. $5.00.
COPY #2. This copy appears to be a late 50's reissue of the original, because it's got a Mercury EmArcy Jazz label, instead of the original silver drummer EmArcy label. The cover on this one is in really nice condition except for a 2" spine split at upper right. Still, it's NMINT-. The vinyl is NMINT-. Overall, this one is a great copy -- NMINT- condition. $8.00.
COPY #3. This copy appears to be a late 50's reissue of the original, because it's got a Mercury EmArcy Jazz label, instead of the original silver drummer EmArcy label. The cover on this one is a clean and nice NMINT. The vinyl has some light scratching, so let's call it EX. Overall, this copy is EX++. Just $9.00.

DINAH WASHINGTON, DINAH WASHINGTON -- Everest FS 297

This LP is a 1970s compilation of various Dinah Washington songs. It includes the track "Willow Weep for Me" from the "Dinah!" LP. MF is a probable sideman on this track.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has just the slighest bit of ring wear at top center. It's NMINT-. The vinyl has some scratching on one track (not the MF track). Due to the scratching, it's just EX (otherwise, the other tracks are NMINT). Overall, this copy is EX to EX+. Just $4.00.
COPY #2. This copy has a NMINT cover and NMINT- vinyl. It's in excellent condition. $8.00.
