Sal Salvador LPs with Maynard Ferguson

THE SAL SALVADOR QUARTET WITH BRASS, COLORS IN SOUND -- Decca DL 9210

Did you know that Maynard recorded an LP back in 1958 with Sal Salvador on which he appeared as "Foxy Corby?" Yes, he did, and this is it. The name "Foxy" apparently came from his nickname, "Maynard the Fox," and the "Corby" part was his daughter's first name. Thus, the pseudonymn, "Foxy Corby." He had to appear under a pseudonymn, because he was signed with another record label at the time. This is the MONO version of this great LP. A relatively rare and very collectible LP!!! I've seen one priced at $80.00 at a prominent jazz record store in L.A.!
COPY #1. The cover on this copy is super clean and nice, with just the faintest hint of a bend on the very tip of the bottom, left-hand corner, and there's a tiny, slightly discolored spot on the back where a price sticker was carefully removed. Even with these two tiny problems, it's still easily a NMINT cover -- one of the nicest I've seen. The vinyl is super, as well. I wasn't sure which copy to keep for my collection, so I played this copy for comparison. It was a toss-up. This one has a few ultra fine surface scratches in a few spots, but it plays GREAT! I'm going to be conservative, and call it NMINT-, but I don't know any dealers who wouldn't call it NMINT. Overall, this copy is a super clean and nice NMINT- to NMINT -- one of the best I've seen in this 40+ year old LP. Yours for $24.00. BONUS. WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS LP I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD, MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.

THE SAL SALVADOR QUARTET WITH BRASS, COLORS IN SOUND -- Decca DL 79210

Did you know that Maynard recorded an LP back in 1958 with Sal Salvador on which he appeared as "Foxy Corby?" Yes, he did, and this is it. The name "Foxy" apparently came from his nickname, "Maynard the Fox," and the "Corby" part was his daughter's first name. Thus, the pseudonymn, "Foxy Corby." He had to appear under a pseudonymn, because he was signed with another record label at the time. This is the STEREO version of this great LP. A relatively rare and very collectible LP!!! I've seen one priced at $80.00 at a prominent jazz record store in L.A.!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first STEREO copy of this LP I've had in some time. The cover on this one is really pristine. The only problems are a 1/2" section of the spine at top left that's got the spine paper missing, and a neat rubber-stamped "Victor Music" on the back cover. Still, it's a very clean cover, and rates at least an EX++. The disc has clean and nice labels, and the vinyl is NMINT! Really a nice copy, this one rates a NMINT- overall, and it's $23.00. BONUS. WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS LP I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD, MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.
COPY #2. Just in, the cover on this one is clean and nice, with the only problems being a 4" seam split at upper right, and a little toning on the back. Still, it's an EX+ cover. The vinyl is clean and nice, with super clean labels, and it's rated NMINT! Overall, this copy is NMINT-. $23.00. BONUS. WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS LP I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD, MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.
COPY #3. The cover on this one looks really nice, but on closer inspection there is an older tape repair at top center that has yellowed a bit with time. There are also newer repairs to both the top and bottom seam which were done much better. (These covers are very brittle, as a rule.) Since it looks so nice still, I'll rate it just slightly above average -- VG+. The vinyl has quite a few fine surface scratches, which results in background noise on playback, especially in the softer passages. I'd rate it as VG. Overall, this is just an average, VG to VG+ copy. It's $10.00. BONUS. WHEN YOU PURCHASE THIS LP I WILL INCLUDE A TRANSCRIPTION CD, MADE DIRECTLY FROM THE LP AT NO EXTRA CHARGE.

THE SAL SALVADOR QUARTET WITH BRASS, COLORS IN SOUND 1958 (FRENCH RELEASE) -- MCA Records 510205 (BA-212)

This French re-issue of the Colors in Sound LP has Maynard listed as himself, not as "Foxy Corby." Liner notes are in French, but there's a superb discography of the session included. Really a super nice repackaging on an excellent LP.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, LEONARD FEATHER PRESENTS ENCYCLOPEDIA OF JAZZ ON RECORDS - VOL. 5 -- MCA Records MCA2-4063

This is a 1974 double gatefold LP set that includes MF in the Sal Salvador band on the tune Deep Down, recorded 4/23/58. These LPs are very hard to find. I only rarely get one of them. And -- they have a black cover, so ring wear is going to be on issue on most copies.
COPY #1. Here's the first copy of this hard-to-find LP that I've ever had for sale on the website. The cover on this one has some of the typical record ring wear, and there's a core hole drilled through the cover at upper left (a cut-out item). If it were just for the ring wear, I'd call this cover NMINT-, but due to the core hole, it's just EX. The vinyl is easily NMINT. Due to the core hole, I can let this copy go for just $10.00.
