Johnny Richards LPs with Maynard Ferguson

JOHNNY RICHARDS, SOMETHING ELSE -- Bethlehem BCP-6011

This is the original 1956 LP entitled Something Else. It's fantastic progressive big band jazz -- similar to the 1950s work of Stan Kenton. It's REALLY good! And Maynard is right there in the middle of all of it, lending plenty of high note presence to the LP. A MUST for every MF collector! It lists in the jazz guide for $40.00 in NMINT condition.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

JOHNNY RICHARDS, SOMETHING ELSE BY JOHNNY RICHARDS (UK RELEASE) -- Affinity AFF 155

Here's the 1980s (?) UK version of the 1956 LP entitled Something Else. It's fantastic progressive big band jazz -- similar to the 1950s work of Stan Kenton. It's REALLY good! And Maynard is right there in the middle of all of it, lending plenty of high note presence to the LP. A MUST for every MF collector! This UK version of the LP is very rare, and is almost never seen here in the U.S.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

VARIOUS ARTISTS, 4 LESSONS IN JAZZ -- Aamco ALF 302

Back in the late '50s or early '60s, Aamco released this compilation LP including tunes by Charlie Mingus, Johnny Richards, The Australian Jazz Quartet, and Art Blakey. Included was the Johnny Richards tune "Aijolon" (sic). (Yes, it should have been "Aijalon.") Anyway, as you know, MF played on this tune. This would probably be a run-of-the-mill LP, except that it's got a "cheesecake" cover of a scantily clad "teacher" in front of a blackboard, teaching us "4 Lessons in Jazz." As you know, this type of cover on the earlier LPs immediately escalates the price, due to the many general collectors that collect this type of material. Thus, this LP is extremely hard to find.
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first copy of this rare LP I've ever had for sale on this website. The cover on this one looks GREAT! The front paper is super clean and nice -- much better than you'll find on 90% of these LPs. However, on close inspection, there's some clear tape on the upper seam, and a bit more on the spine. There's a 2" seam crack at bottom center, as well as a few spots of roughness on the upper spine. (Aamco covers are prone to splits of the seams and spine.) So, given the seam and spine flaws, let's call an otherwise NMINT-looking cover just EX+. The vinyl has a scuff and quite a few very light surface scratches. It plays through OK, but there's a bit of background noise in places. It's EX-. So, overall, this copy is in the EX range. Due to its extreme rarity, this copy is yours for $18.00.
COPY #2. Just in, the cover on this one has had both the spine and the upper seam carefully mended with clear tape. It's very hard to detect. Otherwise, the cover is a super clean and nice NMINT. Due to the tape repair, however, I'll only rate the cover EX. The vinyl is EX to EX+. Overall, a nice, solid, EX to EX+ copy of this rare LP. It's $19.00.

JOHNNY RICHARDS, SOMETHING ELSE AGAIN -- Bethlehem BCP-6032

This is a 1977 re-issue of a 1956 LP entitled Something Else. It's fantastic progressive big band jazz -- similar to the 1950s work of Stan Kenton. It's REALLY good! And Maynard is right there in the middle of all of it, lending plenty of high note presence to the LP. A MUST for every MF collector!
COPY #1. The cover on this one is just like new -- NMINT+. The vinyl is equally as nice -- also NMINT+. Overall, this is a beautiful, like-new copy in NMINT+ condition. $15.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one looks almost new, except there is just the tiniest little saw mark at upper right. This was in a stack of LPs that were saw cut, but the saw almost missed this one. It just left a tiny nick in the edge. Due to this problem, the otherwise NMINT cover is just EX. The vinyl has one long paper scuff on it, but frankly, I don't think this one has ever been played. It's pristine. Due to the paper scuff, let's call it NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX++. Other than the slight cover problem, it's super. $10.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a "DEMONSTRATION/NOT FOR SALE" gold embossed marking at upper left. It has a bit of record ring wear and some edge wear. I'd call it EX to EX+. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT to NMINT+. Overall, this copy is NMINT-. Yours for $11.00.
COPY #4. The cover on this one has a "DEMONSTRATION/NOT FOR SALE" gold embossed marking at upper left. It has a bit of record ring wear and some edge wear. as well as a tiny bend in the lower left corner. I'd call it EX-. The vinyl is a clean and nice NMINT. Overall, this copy is EX+. Yours for $10.00.
COPY #5. The cover on this one shows some record ring wear and a bit of clear tape on both the upper and lower seams. It's EX-. The vinyl has a few scuffs, but plays fine, and rates an EX. Overall, this one is EX- to EX. $8.00.

JOHNNY RICHARDS ORCHESTRA, AIJALON -- Discovery Records DS-895

This is a 1984 re-issue of a mid-'50s LP entitled Something Else. It's fantastic progressive big band jazz -- similar to the 1950s work of Stan Kenton. It's REALLY good! And Maynard is right there in the middle of all of it, lending plenty of high note presence to the LP. A MUST for every MF collector! This LP is MUCH rarer than the 1977 Bethlehem re-issue.
COPY #1. The cover on this one would be NMINT, but there's a hole punch at upper right (a cut-out item). This reduces it to just EX+. The vinyl is NMINT or even better. Overall, this copy is NMINT- (due to the hole punch in the cover). Still, it's a rare, highly desirable re-issue LP. $10.00.
COPY #2. The cover on this one has just the very beginnings of a little record ring wear visible in a couple of spots, but it's minimal. It's still easily a NMINT cover. The vinyl is an ultra clean and nice, perhaps never-played, NMINT++!!! Overall, this copy is NMINT+. Really nice, and it's yours for $18.00.
COPY #3. The cover on this copy is flawless! It's in MINT condition! The vinyl looks like it was played once per side. It's NMINT+! Overall, this one is NMINT+. It's super nice, and it's your for $18.00.
