New York Philharmonic Orchestra CDs with Maynard Ferguson
THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, SELECTIONS FROM THE NEW 10-CD SET, BERNSTEIN LIVE -- Special Editions NYP 2014
Back in 1959, Maynard was guest soloist with the NY Philharmonic Orchestra for four performances of William Russo's Symphony No. 2 "Titans." Russo, better known to most of us as "Bill" Russo, was a member of Maynard's band and arranged a number of jazz charts for him. When he wrote "Titans" for the NY Phil, he had Maynard in mind for the trumpet solo, and indeed, Maynard got the gig. Up until now, this performance only existed on a rare LP (four copies known, to the best of my knowledge). One of those LPs would cost hundreds of dollars. But now the New York Philharmonic has released "Titans" as part of a 10-CD set. It costs $195.00!!! And Maynard only plays on ONE track -- Movement IV of "Titans." (OK. I'm a lunatic. I actually bought one because I wanted the whole symphony!) BUT ... that same track (Movement IV) is on this SAMPLER CD, and it's a heck of a lot LESS expensive. I originally found 10 copies of this CD very cheap. All those copies sold out. I did find some more, but unfortunately, these copies are a bit more. Still, if you don't have a copy, grab one. It's a classic!
COPY #1. Just in, this is the first one of these CDs I've had in almost two years. They're quite hard to find now. This one is used, but is almost like new, in NMINT++ condition. It's $30.00.
COPY #2. Just in, I was lucky to find yet another copy of this rare CD. This one is used, but is almost like new, in NMINT++ condition. It's $30.00.
THE NEW YORK PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA, BERNSTEIN LIVE, SPECIAL EDITION FOR TEACHERS, VOL. 2 -- Special Editions NYP 0201
The original Titans came out on the Bernstein Live CD set in 2000. What I only found out recently is that in 2002, the NY Philharmonic issued the second set that was intended for teachers to use in their classrooms. It includes a large booklet with more in-depth information about some of the pieces from the original 10-CD set. It's intended to highlight some wonderful music and introduce it to children in the classroom. So you get this wonderful booklet, and it includes a CD (which is different from the original sampler, but still contains Titans Movement IV with MF). Included is a nice write-up about Bill Russo, the composer, and also a full-page interview with Maynard, talking about his experience playing this symphony with the NY Phil in Carnegie Hall. This is a wonderful, MUST HAVE set for every serious MF collector.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.
