Stan Kenton 78 RPM Records with Maynard Ferguson

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, EVENING IN PAKISTAN / JOLLY ROGERS – Capitol 1043

These two tracks were recorded on 2/4 and 2/5/50, respectively, and of course, Maynard peformed on both. This is one of the earliest recordings with the Kenton Orchestra.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BUT THEN YOU KISSED ME / EASY GO – Capitol 1191

These two tracks were recorded 8/21/50, and, of course, Maynard peformed on both.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

NAT "KING" COLE AND STAN KENTON, ORANGE COLORED SKY / JAM-BO – Capitol 1184

On 8/16/50, one year to the day after the famous Charlie Barnet session of 1949, Maynard entered the studio again, this time with the Kenton Orchestra, backing Nat "King" Cole on these two great tracks. Maynard WAILS in several spots on Orange Colored Sky! This is a very difficult 78 to find, because the Nat "King" Cole collectors grab them up quickly. But it's also a fundamental part of every MF collection.
COPY #1. The labels on this copy are in fantastic condition -- like new. The disc is pretty nice, as well -- EX+. A nice, solid copy -- $7.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one are like new. The disc rates an EX-. A solid copy, $4.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this copy are clean and nice -- almost like new. The disc rates an EX. $6.00.
COPY #4. The labels on this one have some lines scrached into both sides. Apparently it's a cut-out item. The disc is an average VG. Just $2.00 if you buy anything else on the website; otherwise, $3.00.
COPY #5. The labels on this one are super clean and nice and the disc itself is EX- to EX. Yours for $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, EASY GO / BUT THEN YOU KISSED ME -- Capitol 1191

Here’s MF with the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the tracks Easy Go and But Then You Kissed Me (both recorded 8/21/50).
COPY #1. This copy has pristine labels and a NMINT- disc. It's really a nice copy. $7.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one are like new, and the disc is VG to VG+. It's $4.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this one are like new, and the disc is EX- to EX. It's $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BE EASY, BE TENDER / LOVE FOR SALE -- Capitol 1236

Here’s MF with the Stan Kenton Orchestra on the tracks Be Easy, Be Tender (recorded 8/21/50) and Love for Sale (recorded 9/12/50).
COPY #1. This copy has pristine labels and a NMINT- disc. I believe it's the first copy I've ever had for sale, and it's really a nice copy. $7.00.
COPY #2. Here's something hard-to-find -- a white label promo version of this great little 78. The labels are clean, nice, and undamaged, and the disc, although scuffed, should play with no major problems. It's VG+. $6.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, VIVA PRADO, I'M SO IN THE MOOD – Capitol 1279

Maynard performs on both of these tracks, recorded 9/12/50. He solos on Viva Prado, and this is noted on the label. This, of course, makes this an exceptionally desirable 78.
COPY #1. The labels on this copy are in pristine condition! The disc has some cloudiness but otherwise it's EX+. A great copy. $5.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one are ultra clean and nice. The disc rates an EX-. Priced right at $4.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this copy are a bit damaged. On the Viva Prado side there's a couple of light oval scratches on the label -- very minor. On the I'm So In the Mood Side there's a minor tear and some discoloration from where a sticker was removed. The disc itself is somewhere in the EX range -- well above average. Overall, due to the sticker damage, let's call this one VG+. A solid copy, $3.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SANTA LUCIA / PAGLIACCI – Capitol 7-1306

Here's MF with the Kenton Orchestra on two tracks, recorded 9/14/50.
COPY #1. Here's an unusual WHITE LABEL PROMO copy of this interesting little 78. The label on the Santa Lucia side is almost perfect, but you can see some very faint evidence that a sticker was removed -- just a small bit of discoloration in a small spot. On the Pagliacci side, it looks like someone wrote "99" in small red letter, then someone else crossed it out with a black marker, then someone else put a piece of tape over it, then someone else removed the tape. So there's a stain, with a crossed-out red "99" in the middle of it. The disc has a few light surface scratches visible. It's EX. Due to the label damage, let's call this one VG+. Just $3.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SEPTEMBER SONG / ARTISTRY IN TANGO – Capitol 1480

Here's MF with the Kenton Orchestra on the Kenton hit September Song, as well as the track Artistry in Tango, both recorded 3/20/51.
COPY #1. The labels on this copy are pristine, but the disc has a lot of scuffing, light scratches, and surface wear. Overall, this copy is just VG -- an average copy. Just $3.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this copy are pristine, but the disc has a lot of scuffing, light scratches, and surface wear. Overall, this copy is just VG -- an average copy. Just $3.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this copy are ultra clean and nice. The disc has a couple of spots where it's lost its gloss over the years. I'd still rate it as EX-. Overall, this is a nice, solid EX copy. $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, TORTILLAS AND BEANS / DYNAFLOW – Capitol 1535

Here's MF with the Kenton Orchestra on two great tracks, recorded 3/28/51.
COPY #1. The labels on this one are pretty nice. The disc has quite a bit of scuffing and light surface scratches. Overall, it's VG+. $4.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SEPTEMBER SONG / LAURA – Capitol 1680

Here's MF with the Kenton Orchestra on two of the biggest Kenton hits, September Song, recorded 3/20/51 and Laura, recorded 5/28/51.
SORRY! NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, JUMP FOR JOE / LAURA – Capitol 1704

Here's MF with the Kenton Orchestra on two GREAT Kenton hits, September Song, recorded 3/20/51 and Jump for Joe, recorded 5/31/51.
COPY #1. The labels on this one are super clean and nice. The disc is "cloudy" on the Laura side, but overall, it still rates an EX. $5.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one are ultra clean and nice. Just super! The disc on this one has a number of scuffs and light scratches. It's VG-. Yours for $3.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this one are super clean and nice. There are a few scuffs and light scratches on the disc, but it easily rates on EX. $6.00.
COPY #4. The labels on this copy are like new. The disc itself is VG, with some scuffs and light surface scratches. $4.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, NIGHT WATCH / FRANCESCA – Capitol 1774

On 6/29/51, MF laid down these two tracks with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. This is one of the earliest recordings by MF, especially hard-to-find in this 78 RPM format.
COPY #1. This copy is quite nice -- EX+ condition, with a really nice label, as well. $6.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one extra clean and nice. The vinyl is EX. $5.00.
COPY #3. The label on the Night Watch side has a sligtly cloudy spot where a sticker was removed. Otherwise, the labels are solid. The disc is a solid EX. $4.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, STREET OF DREAMS / DADDY – Capitol 1823

On 9/20/51, MF laid down these two tracks with the Stan Kenton Orchestra. "Daddy" comes from the RKO picture "The Blue Veil," and features June Christy on vocal.
COPY #1. This copy is the first copy of this 78 I've ever had for sale. There's a little rectangular discoloration on the "Street of Dreams" side, and I think it's from a piece of Scotch tape. The other label is pristine. The disc itself has quite a few light scuffs and surface scratches, and rates a VG. This one is yours for $4.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, BLUES IN BURLESQUE (PARTS 1 AND 2) – Capitol 1874

This track was recorded 9/20/51, and it takes up both sides of this 78.
COPY #1. The labels on this copy have quite a few spindle marks, and the disc is just GOOD, with some major scuffing and light scratches. It's just a place-holder copy, priced at $4.00, and you can have it for $2.00 if you buy anything else from me.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, TABOO / LONESOME TRAIN – Capitol 2250

Maynard recorded this two tracks with the Kenton Orchestra on 9/11/52. Kay Brown, his first wife, provides the vocal on Lonesome Train. Great stuff!
COPY #1. This copy is a rare yellow label promo version. Stickers have been removed from the labels on both sides, leaving a little bit of discoloration on each label. The disc is NMINT-. Overall, it's a nice, solid copy. $6.00.
COPY #2. This copy has super clean and nice original Capitol purple labels. The disc is pretty nice -- EX to EX+. $7.00.
COPY #3. This copy has the rare yellow promo labels. There's just the slightest discoloration on one label where a sticker was removed (very, very faint) and on the opposite label, there's a tiny bit of reddish toning (perhaps where another 78 with a red label sat next to it for a long period of time. The disc is EX. A nice, solid copy. Yours for $5.00.
COPY #4. I found another one of the yellow promo label copies. Both labels are pristine, except that there's a rectangular discoloration where a sticker was removed on one side. The disc itself is EX. A nice, solid copy, it's $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, HUSH-A-BYE / HARLEM NOCTURNE – Capitol 2373

Maynard is present on the Harlem Nocturne track, recorded 1/22/53.
NO COPIES AVAILABLE AT THIS TIME.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, AND THE BULL WALKED AROUND, OLAY! / JEEPERS CREEPERS -- Capitol 2388

Maynard played with the Kenton Orchestra on “The Bull” and “Jeepers Creepers” recorded 2/11/53. Maynard solos on "The Bull." Chris Connor is featured, and this sounds just like it could have been recorded as part of Two’s Company eight years later. Interestingly, this is the same day that MF layed down the tracks "A Trumpet" and "An Orchestra" with Kenton for Capitol. What a prolific day!!!
COPY #1. This is a normal purple label copy. It has a small nick on the outer edge of the record on one side which will require careful queueing. It's EX except for this small defect, but because of the problem, is only VG+ to EX-. Just $3.00.
COPY #2. This is a yellow label promo copy. There were some old stickers on the label which I was able to mostly remove, but there is a little residue remaining on one side. Someone wrote "2133" in blue ink on the "Bull" side. The disc is EX+. Due to the minor damage to the labels, just $4.00 for this one.
COPY #3. This is a normal purple label copy. It has PRISTINE labels, and the disc, although cloudy, is EX. A solid copy. $5.00.

STAN KENTON AND HIS ORCHESTRA, THE LADY IN RED / UNDER A BLANKET OF BLUE -- Capitol 2822

Maynard played with the Kenton Orchestra on “The Lady in Red” and “Under a Blanket of Blue” recorded 3/31/54 and 5/6/54, respectively. One of the harder 78s to acquire.
COPY #1. This copy is pretty nice, with near perfect labels. The disc, however, is cloudy and has a few scuffs. Overall, it's an EX- copy. $5.00.
COPY #2. The labels on this one are pristine, and the disc is EX-. A very nice, solid copy. $5.00.
COPY #3. The labels on this one are rare WHITE LABEL PROMOS. There's a little reddish toning around the spindle hole on one side and a little tear around the spindle hole on the other side. The disc is nothing to brag about ... a well worn VG-. Overall, let's call this one just GOOD+ (which acutally means a bit below average). Just a space filler until you can find another rare white label copy!!! $2.00.
COPY #4. The labels on this one are the rare WHITE PROMO variety. They are absolutely pristine, except on one side there's a little tearing around the spindle hole. The disc itself is a relatively clean and nice EX. This one is $6.00.
