Sascha Burland LPs with Maynard Ferguson

SASCHA BURLAND AND HIS ORCHESTRA, SWINGIN' THE JINGLES -- Riverside RLP 7515

This is the MONO version of this recording. Sascha Burland was a Hollywood-based orchestra leader back in the 1950s. Sometime in the late 1950s he put together a band, including MF on some tracks, to record a serious jazz album of advertising jingles! I kid you not! And it worked -- mainly because he didn't just have the band play jingles, but instead wrote great, swingin' jazz compositions around those advertising themes. Maynard doesn't play on the entire disk, but he can be heard prominently on the track Chiquita Banana. No folks, I'm NOT making this up. This is the real thing, and it's an EXTRELEMLY rare LP. Years ago I saw semi-decent copies of this LP sell for $250.00!!! One major collector in Australia told me his collection of MF vinyl was complete except for this LP! An absolute MUST for every completist collector.
COPY #1. The cover on this one has a price-sticker-sized square patch of the front paper missing at upper right. (It's about 3/4 inch square.) There's a bit of edge wear, as well. On the back, "DJ COPY NOT FOR SALE" is rubber stamped at top. There's also a bit of water damage in the upper right corner. All these little flaws reduce the cover to just VG-. It really looks pretty nice except for that little square patch of missing front paper, but it's still a flawed cover. The vinyl has clean and nice labels, but the disc itself has several scuffs and very light surface scratches. It's in the EX to EX+ range. So this one probably rates a VG+ overall (just a hair better than average). Due to these condition problems, this otherwise highly expensive LP can be had for $17.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #2. The cover on this one had a hole drilled right through the middle of the cover. There's a matching hole in the record label. So this was obviously a "cut-out" item. There's clear tape on both seams and the spine, but someone did this repair quite nicely, and it's not too noticeable. On the back there's a little brownish staining along one edge, and some general aging. You know, for all these little problems, this is still a remarkably nice looking cover. It's just VG-, but looks more like EX. The vinyl has some light surface scratching, and this translates to background noise on playback. It's probably in the VG range -- just average. Overall, this copy is VG- to VG. It's $15.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #3. The cover on this one has a rice-sized scrape at upper left, a 1/4" tear near the bottom right corner, a minor corner bend at lower left, and some roughnes along the spine. All these little issues make an otherwise quite-nice looking cover just VG -- an average copy. The vinyl has some light surface scratches visible, and rates an EX to EX+. Overall, this copy is in the EX- range. It's $19.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #4. The cover on this one is clean and nice. There's a bit of wear on the seams and a repaired seam 4" at upper right, and a repaired spine 6" at bottom. But the repairs are carefully done and hard to detect. I'd rate this cover as very attractive, but due to the various issues, just EX-. The vinyl is a very solid EX+. Overall, this copy is in the EX range. It's $20.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #5. The cover on this one is clean and nice. There's a bit of surface wear visible, there's a small pen mark at upper left, there's a slight corner bend at upper left, there is definite wear to the seams and spine, . There are also some cracks on the spine, but it has not separated, and a minor corner bend at lower left. This is still a nice cover, and even with the minor issues, it's still easily EX+. The vinyl is super -- NMINT! Overall, this copy is in the NMINT- range. It's $22.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
COPY #6. The cover on this one has some issues. There's a bit of surface wear visible, but it's minimal. There are also some cracks on the spine, but it has not separated, and minor corner bends at upper left and lower right. There is some slight seam separation both top and bottom. So although it still looks pretty nice, it's just an average cover -- VG. The vinyl is pretty nice. There are some light surface scuffs and a couple of light scratches. I played the track Chiquita Banana, on which Maynard soars, and it prayer GREAT! I'm rating the vinyl as EX. Overall, this copy is in the VG+ to EX- range. It's $18.00. BONUS! THIS LP COMES WITH A TRANSCRIPTION CD OF ALL THE TRACKS RECORDED DIRECTLY FROM THE LP.
