What Superman's Dead Means To Me...
This is one of the two songs that have the most meaning to me, out of EVERY song in the world. This is the song that helped make me into the person I am today.
As it is, SD’s the single that drew me into OLP in the first place. When I got their cd, I immediately looked into SD because that was the only song I knew so far. So I spent about 3 weeks analyzing it, comparing it to my life, and the people that surrounded me. It turned out that there was great significance between the two. SD was like a story on me and everyone else my age.
SD is about how some people these days, get so caught up in being "cool" and in the "in" crowd, that they forget who they are, and go along with the latest trends. Eventually, people like that turn out to the same type of snobby person. Everyone following each other, comparing who has better clothes, trying to be the "most popular"….. Basically, it’s an ever-going cycle of competitions between each other.
You have no mind of your own, and fundamentally have your whole identity made up for you by the media, images, and cliques you have to fit into. By the time your 15 or 16, you’re a made-up teenager……Without much of your own say. You forget how to speak out, and give your own opinion. That which you DO give out, was most likely debated in your head, making sure that everyone would agree and that you wouldn’t seem ‘different’. Otherwise, your "friends" might decide that your not ‘cool’ enough anymore…right? All of that happens, when there really should only be ONE person making up that opinion of yours. And that one person is you.
This song scared the living shit out of me, and made me aware of this whole "snob competition" going on. I see it everyday at my own school, in my own neighbourhood. To me, it’s pretty sad. I have learned to stay clear away from those people, and to stick up for myself. Everyone should be able to speak their minds and decide for themselves what’s ‘cool’ and what’s ‘not’. You shouldn’t have to worry about what other people will think or say. You shouldn’t fake yourself out. Stick with your opinion.
