Robin Trower's 6-21-97 Coach House concert song list

This info is from a Robin Trower concert played on 6-21-97 at The Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, California.

  • 14. Extermination Blues, 10:47-10:54PM, Robin-vocals, gu.-a, played fingerstyle.

The band was a three piece featuring:

  • Robin Trower-Guitar/vocals,
  • Livingstone Brown-Bass/vocals,
  • Alvino Bennett-drums.
  • Robin played 14 songs from 9:35PM to 10:54PM, including two encore songs, Crossroads & Extermination blues.

4 songs were from the Bridge of Sighs album,

  • Too Rolling Stoned,
  • Day of the Eagle,
  • Bridge of Sighs,
  • Little Bit of Sympathy.
  • 5 songs were from the 20th Century Blues album*,
  • Rise up Like the Sun,
  • Prisoner of Love,
  • Secret Place,
  • Promise You the Stars,
  • 20th Century Blues.
  • 5 songs were from the Someday Blues album*,
  • I Want You to Love Me,
  • Next In Line,
  • Sweet Little Angel,
  • Crossroads,
  • Extermination Blues*.
  • (* the song Extermination Blues is on both 20th Century Blues and Someday Blues albums(CDs)but was played in the style of the latter recording).

Robin Trower had three Fender Strat Guitars, but only used two,

    Robin Trower(a)(b)(c)Deja Vibe

  • Guitar (a) was a Brown Tobacco Sunburst Fender Strat(used for 13 songs),
  • Guitar (b) was a Metallic Blue Fender Strat (used for one song-Secret Place),
  • Guitar (c) was a Cream Fender Strat (unused backup guitar).
  • Robin Trower used three guitar pedals:
  • 1) Vox Wah,
  • 2) Full Drive 2,
  • 3) Fulltone (stereo)Deja Vibe.
  • Mounted to a Fulltone Pedal board/roadcase made by Michael Fuller/Fulltone
  • Robin's guitar amps were:
  • 1) Fender Hot Rod Deville amp plus one external Fender speaker cab,
  • 2) Marshall JCM 800 Lead amp head plus 2 external Marshall speaker cabs (slanted half stacks).
  • Michael Fuller went through the Marshall amp prior to the tour and stated that the Marshall amps were for backup. At the concert on 6/21/97, I observed that the Marshall JCM 800 amp was at minimum turned on, if not in use.
  • Livingstone Brown's bass was a 5 string with a natural finish, LB's amp was a Gallien-Krueger rack mount Bass amp with Marshall and Ampeg speaker cabs.

    Alvino Bennett used Grestch Drums.

Robin Trower & comany put on a great show. Don't let the idea that the finger style guitar picking Robin used in his new album 'Someday Blues' fool you into thinking that Robin has quieted down. The CD may be somewhat lower in volume. But In concert Robin Trower plays all his songs FULL VOLUME, including the ones from his new Somedays Blues CD.

I could talk(well maybe shout) to my wife from a foot away while the first band played. When Robin Trower played I could hardly hear what she said from an inch away from my ear.

For a three piece band Robin's group puts out a solid wall of sound. Robin's guitar playing was excellent and his vocals were fine(Robin's singing sounds similar to Eric Clapton's). Livingstone Brown's bass playing was strong but his vocals were muddied up in the PA mix(this made Robin's vocals sound even better). Alvino Bennett's drumming provided Robin with a very professional back beat.

The song Crossroads was played a bit different(better in my opinion) than it was recorded on the Somedays Blues CD.

An observation I made about the audience for the 6-21-97 show was that it was almost 75% to 85% couples(male/female)making the audience about 45% to 35% female. At a 1994 Robin Trower concert I observed that the audience was about 95%- 98% male(with my wife being one of about 5 females). I don't know what to make of the difference in the ratio of women(lack of)and men at the earlier concert. It could have been that college was in session and more single males went to the concert without dates. Or it could be that Robin Trower is playing at more venues on this tour making more tickets availible.
