Me, Melvin 'N Andy
This is a book by my great uncle, Andy Anderson. I've always just called him "Uncle Melvin."
His book is an autobiography. He grew up in the corner of Oregon, California and Nevada
alongside the historic Oregon Applegate Trail. He was born July 5, 1928 in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
This was at the beginning of the Depression. He soon moved with his parents to Chiloquin, Oregon.
Chiloquin was known as the "Little Chicago of the West" then. His father was employed in the logging industry
and many of the surrounding lumber mills.
At the age of ten, his family moved to Willow Ranch, California. This is where he grew up. His first steady job
was working horses in the hay fields and then later in the local sawmill.
Andy graduated from the local school there. Then he joined the Navy and served in the Pacific area on a fleet tin can.
He returned to Willow Ranch and married the new school teacher. He was also involved in politics, serving 16 years as Modoc County Supervisor.
In his book, Andy goes way beyond interesting. An autobiography about a boy who lived most of his life in rural Modoc County that is very compelling, historical, enjoyable and socially significant.
The story of his youth shows how his generation and their families entertained themselves and each other and were better off for it. Part of the wonder of this book is that it is written just the way that Andy would talk.
He tells stories about growing up, hunting, fishing, WWII, and life in general.
"Andy Anderson could sell this book with a money back guarantee and never get an issue back. It's a collectors item."-Dennis Smith (Reporter for the Northern California Traveler)
It may seem boring to some of the younger generations, but believe me, it should be read by all of the younger generations. It teaches a lesson about life that gives a whole new perspective to a person and to small town life.
This book was written in an understanding, humorous and entertaining manner. Once you open it, you will not rest until you have finished it. Long after the last pages,
you will remember this book.
