GENERAL MEETING: 2/12/98 AT DIVER DAN'S DIVE SHOP IN SANTA CLARA
Wednesday, 7:20 PM
The meeting was called to order by VP. Steve Lopez with a quorum attending.
OLD BUSINESS:
1.) The new annual club Dive Calendar for 1998 was once again discussed and almost filled as
Dave Sauter volunteered to host the May event, also Steve Lopez accepting responsibility for the
August Ocean Cove two day camp out. Now it only appears that the Sept. two day weekend trip
to BIG SUR - "Camp - Dive" needs a dive host! (How about it, guy that did it last year?) A newly
updated member list should come out shortly keeping everyone up to speed.
2.) Steve suggested a two day camp out at Dillon Beach in July called a Clam-Fishing-(Maybe
Dive) time to dig up some" BIG" horse neck clams.
3.) Steve also pointed out that in buying your fishing license this year and if you're going after
Abs, you'll need to also buy a ABALONE stamp along with the OCEAN ENHANCEMENT
stamp. The new rules include that you must have the license visible. There is also a 2nd rod
charge for the extra fishing pole. It is anticipated that because of the abalone closure in the
southern California, this will naturally free up the game wardens to come and visit us in the north.
Poachers Beware!!
4.) Steve brought to every ones attention that the $10.00 cash money given out at the annual
Christmas Net together" was also payable to any single member attending as we used to have a
sales pitch "$30.00 dues now and get $10.00 back if you go to the Christmas dinner". That makes
it really $20.00 to be a club member and you also get a free air card. Does someone want to put it
in the form of a proposal so the club can vote on it? Tabled for the time being.
5.) Jim Trayer has found a way for the club to be mentioned on the WEB with our own web site.
His research shows we can get this basically free, but any graphic contributions - photographs or
suggestions requested. Any new input ideas are very welcomed. Please contact Jim Trayer at
(408)985-2941, JIM@IPAC.NET
NEW BUSINESS:
1.) It was agreed that an up to date membership list is needed to keep everyone informed. Two
new members have joined since the last list was sent out. Welcome to new members - Richard
Logsdon (408)295-2896 and Fisher Londono (408)253-0116
2.) The Ft.Ross Cabin is already half sold out, only four openings left! $60.00 per person for Fri.,Sat., Sun. Weekend of April 17-19. Abalone opening day. We'll also be doing tank dives at selected spots.
3.) How about a Clam-Fishing-Dive camp out at Dillon Beach in July? Any Takers?

CLUB DIVE - MONASTERY BEACH 12-13-97 ,
by Willis McNeill
Those who preserved and came were rewarded with two great dives. The sky was partially overcast and still with the ocean
stiller yet for a walk in entry and exit to Monastery. Visibility was at least 35 foot, if not more. For the first dive the tide
was in completely, covering the wash rock reference. By the second dive the wash rocks were visible again. Divers were
treated to the usual assortment of sea anemones, rock fish, decorator crabs, starfish, a lemon nudibranch and a seal swim
by. The great visibility made buddy tracking a breeze and scenery watching an ecstasy. The first dive went to 90 ft. and the
second to 70 ft. By the end of the second dive the overcast had become complete and the winds from the approaching rain
were beginning. The ocean remained calm and clear. The divers left with a great appreciation for having caught a
spectacular Monastery diving day.
CLUB DIVE-PT. LOBOS STATE RESERVE 1/24/98 by P. Pearah It was agreed that email
had been very helpful in organizing and facilitating this dive in an efficient manner. Unfortunately,
the dive host apparently lost his email access in the interim, and he was not on the telephone list
because we thought that he was receiving the email list distribution. Consequently, we got our
signals crossed as he tried to cancel the dive at the same time that I was saying that we were ON.
So some people canceled due to reports of 0-5 viz on Fri.,but five of us agreed to meet there and
scope it out with Monterey as a backup plan. Those people were Bill Johns, Scott Kern, Will
McNeill, Paul Perch and Jim Trayer. Sorry about the confusion, but - think that overall communication
is improving. We were greeted by partly sunny skies with air temp. around 60 and maybe a 10- 15 knot wind out of the
west/southwest. When we got down to Whaler's Cove, divers were slowly gearing up, as if waiting for someone else to go
first and report the conditions. The Kourageouus Kritters were soon ready and swimming out towards the southern rock
reef under the leadership of Paul Pearah. Viz was around 5 ft in the cove, but opened up as we got further out. By the time
we descended in about 30-35 ft of water, the sun was shining brightly. We headed out farther along the reef. Viz was about
20-25 ft, and the five of us had no trouble sticking together as a group. There were ling cod, a juvenile sheepshead, several
nudibranchs, and sea lions that seemed to be watching us from the edge of visibility. The dive went very smoothly, and
everyone came up together about 50 ft from the boat ramp after about 45 min., with an average of 1000 lbs. left, like you
read about in the textbooks. We took a short lunch break, as our max depth had been no more that 40 ft. After about a hour
and a half, we were ready to head back in. This time, Scott suggested we swim further out to the end of the same reef, near
the farthest rock (bird Rock), Jim brought along his brand new video camera for the quarter mile swim, apparently anxious
to get into excellent swimming condition for a spring and summer of avid diving. After a leisurely swim out, we descended
onto the reef, This time under the auspices of Bill Johns. I could see the divers at 80 ft when I was at 40 ft, and horizontal
viz was at least 25 ft. This time we saw a good-sized ling, about 30 in. I would say. We looked at a wall that was carpeted
in strawberry anemones last year, but they were gone. We wondered whether this could be attributed to EL NINO. Jim
looked like a strange sub aquatic craft when viewed from a distance with his dual video lights burning bright, and showed
remarkable agility with his new toy. This time Scott and I split off from the others, but once again navigation was good and
another 45 min dive went off without a hitch. Afterwards, we went down the coast to look at Moby Ling Cove and the Ab
Labs, two of the more advanced sites that we may be diving later this year. Thanks to everyone for another great dive day,
especially whoever arranged a beautiful, sunny 65 degree day with no traffic on the way
It should be noted that the regular JAN. schedule dive host's decision to cancel the dive was for
safety reasons based on his conversation with the park ranger, which was the known information
at that time.
