Schizandra is found in Northern China, Japan and Korea. Historically listed among China's most important herbs, Schizandra is currently popular world wide as an astringent tonic which strengthens the tissues and retains body energy. It also contains mild adaptogens which regulate bodily functions and enables the body to cope with stress. As an adaptogen this herb increases the energy supply of cells in the brain, liver, nerves, muscles, glands and kidneys. It is also capable of building the bodies immune system and protecting against free radical damage. Schizandra also improves digestion of fatty foods through its ability to cleanse the liver and increase the production of bile, which then functions as a digestant for cleaving the fat into fatty acids and glycerine. This improved utilization of the digested food provides for cleaner blood and thus aids in healthier skin. What follows is a list of attributes one might find using Schizandra. Those in Bold type are primary actions while the rest are secondary. This list is not exhaustive nor conclusive.
