But when Morlun attempted to deliver his final deathblow and literally "feed" on Spider-Man, Spidey reanimated in a burst of fury and unleashed the full force of his totemic powers. The predator suddenly became the prey, and Morlun perished – his life force consumed, his body dissipating into dust. The final effort ended Spider-Man's life as well…or so it seemed. Something emerged from Peter Parker's cadaver, leaving behind a broken window in Avengers Tower and a hollow shelf of a corpse. While this creature created a cocoon far away from the Tower, Peter Parker's spiritual journey led him to confront the spider within. Now, renewed and reborn, Peter has reunited with his family and friends. But many questions about his sudden return still linger... ACT 1: Tony Stark and his staff are performing a series of test on Peter Parker in the Avengers Tower laboratory. Preliminary results indicate that Peter did indeed shed his skin and that his metamorphosis is still not complete. In walks Hank Pym and Reed Richards, who offer their medical expertise and propose more testing. ACT 2: In another part of the building, scientists are studying the remains of Peter's first body. Unbeknownst to them, hundreds of small spiders are dropping down from the ceiling. ACT 3: The story switches to Midtown High School where the principal is interviewing (for a Phys. Ed job) none other than Flash Thompson, who has miraculously come out of his coma and almost fully rehabilitated. The principal is a tad concerned with the fact that, one, Flash is not an accredited teacher and that, two, Flash might be a psycho or something like that. Flash honestly reveals that there are chunks of his memory that are gone and that pieces of his life are holes. Standing up, he points to the school trophy display and draws attention to the lack of trophy therein and explains that, given the opportunity, he will help the school replenish its display. The principal agrees to give Flash a shot and tells Flash that an old friend of his, Peter Parker, also teaches at the school. Flash is ecstatic and tells the principal that he hasn't seen Peter since high school, which of course isn't true and which seems to indicate that Flash has lost all his memories of Peter after graduating from high school. ACT 4: At Avengers Tower, Wolverine is eating lunch when Mary Jane walks in the kitchen and gives him a hug and a kiss. Taken aback, Wolverine asks why she kissed him and she explains that she is grateful for him allowing her to take her anger out on him when Peter was dead, so as to work through her grief. As she leaves the kitchen, she explains that she realized he could never really have hit on her since he must know, deep down, that she'd rather cut off her head than ever go out with him. Wolverine turns over to Jarvis and asks him whether or not that was a compliment or a dis. Jarvis can't tell. ACT 5: Back inside the laboratory, Peter has had enough testing for one day so he decides to take his leave. Tony tells Peter that there is much more work to do and that he had hoped to help him redesign his costume. Walking away, Peter tells Tony that they can wait. Tony comes up behind Peter and tells him that there are still too many questions to answer. As his hand reaches for Peter's shoulder, Peter suddenly moves like a speeding bullet, circles Tony and sends him to the ground. In the background, Reed Richards and Hank Pym watch on in amazement. Peter apologizes to Tony and explains that he somehow reacted instinctively. Pym asks if it was related to his spider-sense and Peter explains that it usually only goes off when there is danger nearby. Peter goes on explaining that, this time, the sudden movement alone made him think he was under attack and his body simply reacted. Pym asks how he felt while in motion. Peter replies that it felt like he was finally able to move at full speed after years of being weighed down by "metal donuts" (making reference to the metal donuts that baseball players put on their bats for their on-deck swings). Just then, Aunt May enters the laboratory and tells Tony, Hank and Reed that they should give Peter a break so he can go out and enjoy his second chance to life. None of them argue with her so Peter takes off, followed a few minutes later by Aunt May. ACT 6: Peter and Mary Jane, having fun together, run into Luke Cage and Jessica Drew while running through the Tower. Luke's impression of that is that Peter and MJ are about to go "do it" but that is far from the truth because seconds later, Peter has donned his Spider-Man costume and is web-slinging out of the Tower, with MJ webbed on his back, screaming in excitement. ACT 7: Back Avengers Tower, in the laboratory where scientists were studying the remains of Peter's first body, the scientists are webbed up to the walls of the lab while millions of tiny spiders have taken over the body and are starting to eat away at it. ACT 8: Back above the New York City rooftops, Peter/Spidey and Mary Jane are having a heartfelt talk about the events of the last few weeks and how they (i.e. the events) have changed their outlook on life. While this conversation takes place, Spidey stops a purse-snatcher and MJ also "flips the bird" to J. Jonah Jameson as they swing by the Daily Bugle. Robbie Robertson has to stop Jonah from jumping out the window at Spidey. Suddenly, Spidey's spider-sense kicks in really hard. Spidey almost loses control but manages to shoot a web-line and the two of them come to a halt against the side of a building. MJ asks Spidey if he's okay to which Spidey replies that something is happening back at Avengers Tower, something spider-related. Freaked out, he heads back towards the Tower at full speed. ACT 9: When he reaches the Tower, he is completely taken aback at the sight of the building, as there is a giant web covering the top third of the Tower. Landing them down at street level, Spidey tells MJ to check up on Aunt May and he then disappears inside the building (he also briefly tells her that he "embraced the spider" and promises to tell her all about it later). ACT 10: He makes his way inside the building, guided by his spider-sense. He reaches the laboratory where his old body was being examined and notices that there are several "cannibal spiders" covering the door to the lab. Realizing that those types of spiders feed on other spiders, Spidey rips the door off his hinges and enters the lab, where he discovers that millions of tiny little spiders have eaten his old body completely. Ticked off, he throws aside the table upon which his old body sat, sending the spiders flying all over the place. Strangely, the spiders regroup and take the shape of a creature, which closely resembles that of the Gatekeeper, which was last seen in Amazing Spider-Man #507, but somehow, Peter realizes that this creature is different. Suddenly, large stingers spring out from his wrist, shocking the hell out of him. Though confused and terrified at what is happening to him, Spidey realizes that he can sort this out later and attacks the creature. Somehow (and amazingly), the creature is capable of copying Spidey's every move and it manages to escape from Avengers Tower. To be continued in Marvel Knights Spider-Man #22.
