Red Golden Pheasants
These chicks are being brooded with a few blue Orpington chicks and are getting along with them. There have been no pecking problems in spite of the fact that a white light is being used. Research has shown that a white light may increase feed conversion in game birds. They are difficult to photograph because they are in constant motion. When frightened, they tend to hunker down rather than run although their legs are very long and they can move quickly. This is a mixed hatch of red, yellow and cinnamon. At this age, they can get their body through any opening that their head will fit into and cannot use the external feeders in a box brooder.
2 days old
At 18 days they are eating from the external feeder and are able to fly enough to get out of the brooder if the top is lifted carelessly. Opening for feeders must still be adjusted carefully as these little guys are escape artists!
Here they are at 4 1/2 weeks. Growth rate has been phenomenal and there have been no problems with pecking even with the use of a white light. They are skittish but no more so than the Orpington chicks raised in the brooder with them. They will be going to outside pens soon.
