[BACK] Other
themes: Tracing character themes through the book Come Morning Courtesy of Mrs. Teillon’s 4th
Grade Class of 2014 Bravery – When Free went into the burning
house, he risked his life….(p. 94-95) Free heard
something in the woods, he remained calm and walked back to the cabin instead
of running and screaming. (p. 22) Liza
had courage to go to Free’s home and talk in
secret in code about runaway slaves. A big risk because if slave catchers
found out they would think that she was part of the underground railroad. ( Free is
confronted by dogs, and tells the others to hide while he stays out in the open.
When the owner of the dogs comes out, Free makes him believe the story he
made up. ( It took
friendship for Free and Liza to trust each other.
(p. 85) Liza
said on page 77 – “Only thee knows what station is next.” Liza
is trusting Free that he can work on the Underground Railroad. Pap trusts
Free that he can understand what he is talking about. (p. 29-30) Pap didn’t
want to continue helping slave. Free convinced him that he need
to persevere. “Nehemiah
dusted off his hands. You wash up at the pump tonight. Creek is running hard
and it’s still cold to boot.” Free says,
“Just one dip Pap.” Nehemiah says,
“I wait for you, then.” Chapter 13 Free had to
carry slaves with him to meet Harriet Tubman. He
had to carry a baby, and if he dropped him the baby would cry and slave
catchers would catch them. [TOP] |
