CHRIS
the prankster
"Duck!" Chris's scream prompts everyone to drop to their knees near Lake Michigan, where 'N Sync are doing an interview. Then he innocently
points to the water. "Look, a duck."
"Chris is crazy...he needs Ritalin. He's off the wall," says Justin. Christopher Alan Kirkpatrick may be 10 years Justin's senior, but you wouldn't
know it. Perpetually messing with the heads of visitors unaccustomed to his cutting sense of humor, Chris seems bent on being the ruckus leader.
At TEEN PEOPLE'S cover shoot, he instigates a bout of Riverdance-inspired footwork, leads his mates in a rousing chorus of Flipmode Squad's "Cha
Cha Cha," and stages his own imaginary talk show on which he interrogates the freshly dubbed Loser Lance.
Despite all his energy, Chris's genuine, sweet nature rushes to the surface when, during this waterside chat, a wheel-chair bound fan and her
family happen by. Upon hearing that they live near his hometown, Clarion, Pa., he walks right over to greet them.
And there are other surprises: "When I was little, I wanted to be Gene Kelly. He sang and danced," says Chris, who grew up as the only guy in
the houseful of women: mom Beverly and four sisters (Molly, 24; Kate, 22; Emily, 16; and Taylor, 6). His parents are divorced, and dad Byron
"lives on a boat somewhere," says Chris. "But I don't talk to him that much."
Chris, who went to college with Backstreet Boy Howie Dorough, had once strummed guitar and sang R.E.M. and Pearl Jam songs in coffee
shops. After he moved to Orlando in 1990, he got a gig singing in a '50s style doo-wop act. That job inspired him to form his own harmony group.
In 1995, he started 'N Sync.
"I don't think there's ever been a group like us," Chris says matter-of-factly."There are groups like us...that you can hear the vocals and
maybe they're lip-synching. There are groups like us and you can tell they're singing live but their show's lacking [something]. We're the first
group to throw in their face hardcore dancing and singing, then sing a pretty ballad on their stools, then [get] right back in their face dancing
again."
One of Chris's favorite parts of 'N Sync's show is the intro, where they dance to a medley of current hits. Backstreet, he's told, do this too.
"We've been doing it for years," he says, without a smile. "We're just flattered that they're doing it now because they didn't do it before." He
doesn't sound flattered.

CHRIS' Dating Dilemma
exclusively BOP
This otherwise lucky looker says that, unfortunately, his luck doesn't always lend itself to his love life
Over the last year he's acquired a fan base of girls that could fill a small country. So you'd think that Chris Kirkpatrick, the oldest member of
the Florida-based group 'N SYNC, most noted for their smash hit "Tearin' Up My Heart," would have absolutely no problems when it comes to
meeting girls. Boy, are you wrong! You see, the problem has nothing to do with girls themselves, it has to do with Chris. He's totally shy!
"Sometimes I am confident, but a lot of times I am really uncomfortable," the 27-year-old reveals to BOP. "I am really- what's the word? -
timid about approaching girls. Even if a girl will be sitting there looking at me for the longest time, like, 'Hello? Come over and talk to me!' I will
be like, 'Oh my gosh, I don't know. What should I do?"
"I think girls have as much right to ask guys out"
While that's not exactly the response you'd expect to hear from a world-renowned pop star (and an adorable one at that!), that doesn't mean
that Chris has any problems with girls who approach him. "It's the '90s. It's almost the zeros! I think girls have as much right to ask guys out,"
the Clarion, Pennsylvania-native points out. "That would tale a little bit of weight off the guy."
"But," he continues, "I think a guy should pay for dinner. I am, like, whatever, double standards, I know." How sweet is that?
So, once Chris does muster up the courage to ask a girl out on a date or vice versa, how does he keep from regressing back to that timid little
boy? "I like to do things to keep it interesting and to keep it fun," the braided babe smiles. "Just have a good time. I like to keep everything
fresh and keep it spontaneous."
Considering how all of his 'N SYNC groupmates have labeled him the most "spontaneous" and "crazy" guy in the gang, the fact that Chris has
a problem spontaneously asking girls out is a bit of an irony. Perhaps he just needs to approach it like he would any other crazy thing he does.
And we're willing to be, she'll say yes.
