Commitment

“Why can’t you say it?” Lance asked with a mixture of anger and concern in his voice.

“It’s just too much of a commitment for me,” Shelli said looking towards the floor, twiddling her thumbs.

Lance reached out and pulled her chin up. “Shelli, listen to me. I don’t want to do or make you do anything that is uncomfortable, but I need to know you care. Can you at least tell me that? Please.” It was hard for him to keep from breaking down at that moment, but it was even harder for her to keep from saying the committal words.

“I do care about you, Lance. More than you’ll ever know. I’m just not ready to make the commitment and say that,” she looked at the floor again, feeling guilty. She knew it was hurting him because it was hurting her, but she couldn’t commit to a man again, not after what happened the last time.

“Shell-bell?” A slight smile crept onto Lance’s face.

“Yeah, Lance-bear?” She knew that if he was using his pet name for her that he wasn’t mad so she used his to show that she wasn’t either.

“Can we be together forever,” realizing that that seemed like a commitment he added, “or at least for tonight?”

“We can stay together as long as you want.”

They stayed in each other’s arms for hours just listening to each other’s hearts beat. “Lance?”

“Yeah, Babe?”

“I think I can commit to you, if you promise not to hurt me.”

“I promise,” he said earnestly.

“I love you.”

“I love you, too.”

They fell asleep in each other’s arms.
