Childish Games

Chris looked up from the book he was reading to see Joey staring at him. “What do you want? And why are you staring at me?” he asked, a little perturbed.

“Nothing,” Joey said just to annoy Chris.

“Man! you know you can’t do that to me. You have to tell me what you are doing.”

“Can’t make me.”

“Can, too.”

“Try,” Joey challenged Chris with a slight smile.

“Why should I?”

“’Cause I said so.”

“You can’t make me.”

“Then it looks like you can’t make me either.”

“Oh,” Chris said with realization crossing his face. “Then, in that case,” he paused to think. “What were we arguing about?”

Joey looked up at him. “I don’t remember.”

“Do too.”

“Do not.”

“Do too.”

“Do not.”

“Do not.”

“I know I don’t.”

“Not fair.”

“Is too.”

“Is not.”

“Is too.”

“Is not.”

“Is too.”

“’S not.”

“’S too.”

“’S not.”

“’S too.”

At that point Lance walked in.

"'S not."

"'S too."

“What are you talking about?” Lance asked.

Chris and Joey looked up at him. Neither of them had seen him come in. “What do you mean?” Chris asked.

“You were saying snot stew,” Lance said, fully meaning what he said.

Chris and Joey looked at each other and laughed.

“What?” Lance asked.

“It’s over your head,” Chris said.

“Hey, buddy! I’m taller than you.”

“Oh,” Chris said and then paused to think. “Then it’s through your knees.”

“What?” Lance and Joey asked at the same time.

“Don’t gang up on me. I’m short.”

“Too bad,” Joey said. Lance and Joey both pounced on Chris.

A few minutes and five ow's later Justin and JC walked in. They looked at each other and shook their heads. “Children,” Justin muttered, and he and JC joined the pile.
