Chapter Six

A comfortable silence fell upon Emily and I. When she wasn’t looking, I would steal glances at her. Soon, I became very uncomfortable with the fact that she wasn’t saying anything. I really wanted to break the stifling quiet.

“Emily?” I said.

I groaned and looked at him. Silently, I cursed him for disturbing my thoughts. I was having this great fantasy about him. He and I were making love passionately and was interrupted just at the moment when I grabbed his a—

“What is it, Nick?”

“I’m bored.” Nick whined.

I rolled my eyes, “Well, I’m sorry that being stuck in this cabin is inconvenient. What do you want to do?”

//You, if truth were told// “I don’t know. Do you want to read some of my comics? I brought plenty.” he asked, hopefully.

“Why am I not surprised? No, Nick, I don’t want to read comics.”

“Aww, come on please?” he whined some more.

“No! I refuse to read comic books.”

One Hour Later

“I can’t believe I’m reading comic books.” I muttered.

“Ooh, here’s the best part”, he says pointing to a picture, “Here, Wolverine slashes the bad guy.”

“Nick, Wolverine always slashes the bad guy.”

“Would you stop being so negative?”

“Oh, I’m so sorry. I’ll promise to be more positive the next time four tons of ice and snow fall on my house.”

Nick started to go into full pout-mode and it melted my heart. I softened quickly.

“Oh damn, I’m sorry. It’s just that this wasn’t exactly the peaceful weekend I was hoping for.”

“That’s ok. I’m just trying to make the best of a shitty situation.”

“Well, let’s make a pact. I’ll be a bit more optimistic and helpful if you don’t try so hard and whine so much. Ok?”

“Ok. Wait a sec, I don’t whine!”

“The hell you don’t! My God, you can be such a baby it’s scary!”

“Not true! You are such a liar!”

“Am not! Shut up!”

“No! You shut up!”

“There you go, acting childish again.”

“Yeah, well, um, I’m rubber and you’re glue and whatever you say to me bounces off of me and sticks to you! So there!” he said, sticking his tongue out.

“Witty retort! Not!” then, I look at him with his eyes sparkling and his lip stuck out and I couldn’t help but laugh. It started as a giggle and soon I was laughing hysterically. Nick looked at me as if I was crazy then began to laugh too. Soon, we were both rolling around the floor clutching our sides bawling like maniacs. Soon, we calmed down and we sat up, gasping for air.

“I knew I could make you laugh.” He said, still out of breath.

“You were just lucky.” I said, making my face straight.

“Oh really? We’ll just see about that.” He then tackled me and began tickling my ribs. I was laughing so hard, I felt like I would explode.

“Oh, now you’re gonna get it, Pretty-boy!” From there, it was an all out wrestle fest. Just when I thought I got him, his strength would return and the whole thing would start again. I just about had him when my strength gave out. He took this opportunity and pinned me. I was tired from all the wrestling and mad that he got me.

“Wow, you’re strong!” he said, “You gave me a run for my money!”

“At least now you know not to mess with me.”

“Ahh, but you forgot, I have you now.”

I suddenly became nervous. I looked up at him to see he was smiling a smile of victory. That’s not why I was nervous, though. He was lying on top of me with my arms pinned above my head. I felt his weight on me and the heat coming from his body. This was turning me on. //Get a hold of yourself. You have to get out of this position before you lose it// I thought. I looked at him again to see a completely different look on his face. I couldn’t tell what it was I saw in his eyes but I knew I had to move.

“Um, ok. You can get off me now.”

“Oh, uh, sorry.” Slowly he eased himself off me.

I watched Emily move away from me. I felt so stupid for getting ourselves in that kind of situation.

“Um, I’m going to tidy up my stuff. Be back in a sec.” She said.

“Ok.”

I watched her go into the bedroom. I thought about what just happened. We had just gotten to be comfortable with each other and now this happens. I smiled when I thought about how it felt being with her like that. I wished something had happened then. But, she didn’t seem to want it. She all but ran back to the room.

“Face it Carter. She doesn’t want you. Never has, never will.” I muttered.

I groaned and flopped back on the floor.
