I stared at the nightmare grinning back at me. Peter made no move towards them but just stood there grinning like nothing had happened. I looked up at Nick who looked like he was about to lunge at Peter and rip his heart out. At that moment, I wouldn’t have minded if he did just that. I just stood there though, not veiling the hatred in my eyes.

“My darling, I’ve been so worried. I can’t wait to get you home where you can be safe.” Peter smiled but in a way that made a person’s skin crawl.

“I’m not going anywhere with you, Peter.” I looked at him calmly though that was far from what I felt.

“What are you talking about? You have to go home. We are going to get married soon.” Peter almost looked genuinely blank.

“Did you fall and hit your head? We broke up. I left you and I threw your ring in the river.” I was not going to believe this innocent act.

Peter’s face grew hard. “That was a misunderstanding, darling. Come back home.” His eyes flickered at Nick who had moved between him and me.

“The only one who misunderstood is you. We haven’t been together in more than six months. Why are you even here?”

“Sweetie, I realized how wrong I was. Our parents convinced me that the way I was acting is unacceptable. Please, take me back. Things will be different this time. You don’t know how worried I was when I found out about the avalanche. I have changed, really.” His face softened somewhat but he maintained that somewhat evil look in his eyes.

“Oh, so mom and dad told you that you were unacceptable. They didn’t seem to see it that way when I came to them crying in the middle of the night so many times. On the contrary, they reprimanded me and told me to go home where I belong. I don’t think your or their sudden change of heart has to do with all the money involved when the merger takes place. No, Peter, my parents don’t care about my happiness and neither do you. Just go back to whatever rock you crawled out from under.” I looked at him squarely. Nick just stared at him, silently but managed a slight smile at my words. He opened his mouth to say something but decided against it. He clenched his teeth.

“So you’re leaving me for him. Your little trick? Of course, I should have expected this to happen from a little slut like you.” Peter sneered at her.

“Don’t you dare call her that!” Nick moved closer to him but I stopped him before he could do anything.

“I can handle myself, Nick. You’re my back-up, ok?” I spoke to him gently. He nodded and backed off.

“Let me give you a little advice, pal. Don’t waste your time on that little whore. She’s not even good in bed. I know some sluts that are much better than her.” Peter laughed at his own insult.

That’s when something in me snapped. Now usually, I’m a pacifist. I don’t like fighting or conflicts of any kind. Just seeing him there, laughing at me and insulting me opened the floodgates. Every single insult, joke and sneer he has ever said to me since the day I met him came into my mind. Blind rage filled me and I ran and punched him in the stomach with all my strength. He doubled over in pain and I took the opportunity to knee him in the crotch. He fell to ground and went into a fetal position due to the pain. I saw him lying there screaming at me and I just couldn’t stop. I kicked him hard repeatedly. Finally, Nick pulled me away and tried to calm me down. I was free of him. Finally. A wave of relief came over me and I started to cry. All my friends came to comfort me and Nick let me go and stood up. I opened my eyes to see him standing over Peter.

“The next time you come near her, I will be the one to kick your ass and trust me it’ll be much worse. I am six foot two and I bench-press over one hundred and fifty pounds. Don’t let me or her see your sorry, beaten face again.” Nick spat on Peter and walked back to me. He smiled and took me into his embrace again.

“Honey, you did us proud. I would have loved to get that on video.” Jack smiled.

“That was pretty damn funny.” Brian agreed. He had just walked over with the others to see how everything was.

“That bastard deserved it the way he spoke to you.” Kevin said and gave Peter a hatred-filled look. They all nodded in agreement. Peter didn’t notice as he was still on the ground in a fetal position.

“Thank you. All of you.” I said gently.

“Let’s get you to the car. I brought some food and I’m sure you’re hungry after all the energy spent kicking ass.” Lily joked.

“That sounds wonderful. Come on.” I laughed.

Everyone walked over to Lily’s car not bothering to watch his or her step with Peter on the ground. Nick was very attentive to me the entire time and I think everyone noticed. I didn’t care, though. I saw Peter finally get up and limp to his car. As he drove away he yelled out, “Don’t think you’re off the hook! Wait until your family finds out.” He smirked thinking I would be concerned. I just shrugged and laughed. I didn’t care anymore about my family or him. Friends and the man I love surrounded me. All was right to me.
