Breakfast was a lot of fun. They talked, they laughed, and they ate. All the time, Annette was staring at Nick’s handsome features. He had beautiful blond hair that he kept brushing out of his eyes. Those eyes. His eyes were this incredible shade of blue. They shone with light and laughter. Just by looking at him you could tell he was a lot of fun.
“So, Annette, I’ve lived here for years and I’ve never seen you before.”
“Well, that’s because I just moved here last year. From New York City.”
“New York City? Cool.”
“Very.”
“Why did you move here?”
“Well, it seemed like the thing to do. You see, my parents planned out my life. They wanted me to be a doctor. But one day, I saw this woman drawing in the park. I sat down next to her. It turns out she was drawing a tree. I asked her why I was drawing that particular tree and she said it was because that was where her and her late husband first met. Then, out of nowhere, she asked me to draw something. Not wanting to hurt her, I began to draw. Right then, I felt something. That drawing was the most natural thing in the world. That same day I dropped out of college and came here. I’ve never regretted it.”
“Wow. But wait, how do you pay your bills?”
“Well, you see, I used to have an aunt here. She was really cool about my dropping out. But like, after a month she died. I was heartbroken. Was I surprised to find out that she left me over $200,000 in her will! She left it so I can follow my dream. I’ve been living on that ever since.”
“But you can’t live on that forever.”
“I know. I sort of have a job.”
“Really? What do you do?”
“I work for my art teacher. She makes me set up the class and get supplies for her and I get paid $2,ooo dollars a month. That’s enough to pay the bills and the rent and I use the inheritance for my art. I live in a small, low rent beach house. I get through.”
“Well, you seem to have it a little easy.”
“I guess.”
“So, you want to hang out tomorrow?”
“Oh, I can’t. I have classes for the rest of the week.”
“Oh.”
“But, maybe this weekend.”
“Sure.”
“Well, thanks for breakfast, but I have to get to art class.”
“Bye.”
“Bye.”
