Annie and Zac sat like that for a while, just sitting on the couch wrapped in each others arms. Taylor and Jen didn’t interrupt them, they both knew they needed to be together.
"Zac," Annie whispered. "I don’t want to leave you."
"You know you can’t stay here too much longer," he whispered back.
"Yeah, but…I’m afraid," she admitted. "You know all the stuff I believe in. I know witches and aliens exist….and vampires, I wasn’t always too sure about them, but I believe what you saw. I believe that you saw fangs, that she was a vampire. I don’t want to lose you."
"You won’t ever lose me," he whispered. "Never. When you love somebody nothing can ever separate them."
"I guess," she whispered back.
"Annie?" Jen said.
"Yeah?" she replied, not looking at her.
"I think we’d better go," she told her. "Its almost midnight."
Annie sighed. "I guess you’re right." She stood up, but sat down again and gave Zac a deep and passionate kiss goodbye.
"I’ll see you tomorrow," he told her. "I promise."
Annie nodded. "I’ll see you tomorrow." She forced a smile as she looked back at him.
"Annie, it’ll be all right," Jen said gently, putting her arm around Annie’s shoulders.
"I wish I could believe you."
"Caroline Anne Schumacher!" her mother exclaimed as Annie walked into the house.
"Where have you been?" her dad Steve asked.
"Zac had a scary encounter with a fan," she replied. "I’m sorry. It won’t happen again."
"It better not," Steve said.
"I’m going to bed," Annie said, already walking to the stairs.
"Zac."
Zac looked around the living room. He thought he had heard someone call his name. It was about 1:00 am. Taylor had gone to bed right after the girls had left, but Zac had decided to stay downstairs and just think.
"Zac." He heard it again. He looked around. He didn’t see anyone. That was when he saw the eyes in the window. They were a smoky gray…Keller.
"The door!" he exclaimed. He didn’t remember anyone locking the back door. He ran to the door but he was too late, Keller was already there standing in the threshold.
"Miss me?" she asked coldly.
"You," he whispered. "Get out of my house."
"Sorry, no can do."
"What are you?"
"Don’t you know yet?" she asked.
He shook his head.
Keller sighed. "Goddess you’re slow today!" she told him. "I’m a vampire, duh!"
"Then you can’t enter without me inviting you in," he told her.
"Sorry," she told him with a haughty laugh. "That’s not completely correct. You see, the movies are only part right. I can come in without being invited. Oh, you know that whole saying about crosses? Not true. No harm done."
"What about garlic?" he asked softly, frozen in place.
"Garlic?" she repeated. "Garlic Toast. Delish."
"Wooden Stakes?"
"Oh, well, you’ve got me there," she told him. "A good stake through the heart will kill me…but I’m afraid you won’t get that chance. I’m changing you tonight, no doubt about that."
His eyes grew wide with terror as she advanced towards him. Before he could get away she had her arms locked around him and was leaning towards his neck.
"No!" Zac yelled, struggling to get free.
"Stop struggling!" Keller told him. "It’s really much less painful that way, in face it’s quite a rush!"
"Annie," Zac whispered as Keller’s teeth sunk into his neck.
