Chapter 5

"Zac?" Annie asked as Zac quickly walked up to her. "What’s wrong? You look…I don’t know….scared."

"I’m not scared, I just think we should leave now."

"But we just got here!" Annie argued.

"Yeah! And we can’t choose between 10 Things I Hate About You, and Sleepless In Seattle," Jennifer added.

"Get them both," Zac said, throwing a quick glance back to where he had seen Keller.

"Whatever," Annie said. She, Jennifer, Zac, and Taylor walked over to the checkout counter to pay for the movies.

Annie gave Zac a worried look. He kept glancing behind him, as if the Grim Reaper were chasing him! She would have asked him what was wrong, but she know that ‘nothing’ was the best she could get out of him.

When they had paid for their videos, they got into Taylor’s car. They decided to go to go to Annie’s house to watch the movies. It was a Wednesday and her Mom was teaching her brothers religion class at their church, and her Dad was working nights, so they’d have the house all to themselves.

"Want anything to eat?" Annie asked when they were all seated. They were about to put in Interview With The Vampire, but first Annie wanted to speak to Zac in the kitchen.

"No thanks," Jennifer said. "I’ve already eaten too much junk food today."

"Jennifer," Taylor said, looking her in the eye. "You’re not going to get fat! You can have the food!"

Jennifer whacked him with the head with a couch pillow.

"We’ll have whatever you’ve got," Taylor said, whopping Jennifer on the head with another pillow.

"Ok," Annie said. "Come on, Zac, you can help me."

"Huh?" he asked. "Oh, ok."

They got up and walked into the kitchen to get the food.

"Zac," Annie said, stopping and looking him straight in the eye. "Tell me what’s wrong."

"Nothing," he said. "There’s nothing wrong."

"Zac," she said, turning away. "I’ve known you for too long. I know when something’s wrong. We can’t lie to each other. I lost you once, I don’t want to lose you again."

He sighed. She turned around to face him again. He could tell that tears were threatening to spill out of her big brown eyes.

"I’m sorry," he said, wrapping her in a hug. She hugged back. "It’s just, there’s this girl."

Annie backed away slowly, giving him another one of her worried looks.

"No, it’s nothing like that. Here, I’ll start at the beginning. When we went to the movies earlier, I was looking out the window and this girl was staring at me. Then I saw her again when we were at The Pagoda."

"And at the video store?"

"Yeah," he whispered.

"Well…I don’t know what to say."

"It’s nothing," he told her gently. "It’s just paranoia. I just fell like she’s, like, stalking me or something…"

"I guess I understand," Annie said. "The price of stardom."

"Do you forgive me?" he asked, gently cupping her chin in his hand and tilting her face towards him.

"Yeah," she said with a slight smile.

"Good," he said, also smiling. He leaned over and kissed her on the lips.

"Let’s get the food," she said, turning away.

They put a bag of popcorn in the microwave, grabbed a box of chocolate Teddy-Grahams for Annie, and poured some pop for each of them.

"Long enough?" Taylor asked as they came back into the living room with the food.

"Yeah, whatever," Annie said.

"Let’s watch the movie," Zac said.

"Don’t cha just love this movie?" Annie asked.

"I thought you only liked chick flicks?" Taylor asked her.

Jennifer whacked him with the pillow again.

Annie laughed at them. "Actually. I like a lot of different genres. Like, Chick Flicks, Horror…well, not like ET or Jurassic Park cause they’re just like, way too scary!"

"What about vampires?" Taylor asked.

"Oooh! I love vampires!"

"Love ‘em so much you wanna be one?" Zac asked with a teasing smile.

"Oh yeah! As long as you’re right there with me, baby!" she said, leaning close to him and giving him an Eskimo kiss.
