Annie bolted upright in bed. Something was wrong! Something was terribly wrong. Just before she awoke, she swore she had heard Zac. That was impossible! Zac was down the street. Annie glanced at her clock on her nightstand. It was after 2 a.m. Annie picked up the phone and called Jen's number.
"Hello," Jen answered sleepily.
"Jen, it's Annie. I know this is going to sound crazy, but can you come with me to check on Zac?"
"You're right, Annie, that is crazy," Jen said. "Do you know what time it is? I would, but, Annie, it's after 2!" Jen exclaimed.
"I realize that, Jen, but I have a really bad feeling. Please," Annie begged.
"Fine," Jen said. "Be outside in five minutes, and we'll run down the street, but if I get in trouble, I'm going to kill you."
"OK," Annie said.
Five minutes later, as promised, Jen and Annie, in their robes, were running down to the Hanson house. "It's locked," Jen said as she tried the doorknob.
"Before we leave, let's check the back door, just in case," Annie said. They ran around back, and Annie turned the back doorknob. The door easily swung open. Annie and Jen exchanged uneasy glances, and slowly crept into the Hanson house. They saw Zac peacefully sleeping on the couch. "Phew, he's OK," Annie breathed.
"I told you," Jen said, "now let's go."
"OK," Annie said as she looked down at him. She gently pulled the covers around him, and as she did, he rolled over. That's when Annie saw it. There were two holes in Zac's neck. A trail of blood dripped down his neck onto the carpeted floor. Annie screamed in horror.
"What!?" Jen said as she ran to Annie. When she saw Zac, she screamed too.
"What's the matter?!" Taylor and Isaac exclaimed as the thundered down the stairs. Jen and Annie were too shocked to even speak. They both burst into tears, and pointed to Zac.
"Oh my God, he was telling the truth," Taylor whispered. He and Isaac helped Jen and Annie off of the floor.
"I knew I should have stayed here," Annie cried. "I knew I shouldn't have left him, he's like this because of me!"
"We should have listened to him!" Jen cried.
"SShhh," Taylor and Isaac soothed as they comforted Jen and Annie.
"We have to see how he reacts when he wakes up," Isaac said.
"He was calling my name," Annie whispered. "If only we had gotten here sooner!"
