Chapter Nineteen
"Whoa!" Kevin said, putting his hands on the shoulders of the pregnant lady in front of him to steady her. "Guess I'm not the only one who doesn't look where I'm going!" he joked. "You okay?" Oh, God, she thought. Randi looked up at Kevin. "Yeah, I'm fine," she said. "Nice to see you again, Kevin. Love to chat, but I gotta run" she said quickly and attempted to get around Kevin and get to the elevator at the end of the hall.
"Oh, no, you don't" Kevin said, recovering from his shock to grab her elbow. "Randi," he said, "we need to talk."
"I've done all the talking I'm going to. Now let me go!" Randi said as she looked at Kevin defiantly.
"Randi, please" he begged.
The sight of Kevin pleading with her melted Randi's heart. "Oh, all right. But not for long. I really do have to go" she relented.
Kevin breathed a sigh of relief. "Where can we go to talk in private?"
Randi led Kevin into the waiting room off of the ICU unit at the end of the hall. "So talk," she said sitting down on one of the couches.
Kevin sat next to her. "Where do I start?" he asked himself out loud.
"How 'bout the beginning" Randi tiredly suggested. It's the beginning of the end for me anyway, she thought.
Kevin sat back and turned to look Randi in the eye. "Why'd you leave, Randi? Didn't you think I'd want to part of the decision? Didn't you know I'd want more than a note to wake up to?" he asked, his pain evident in his eyes.
Tears sprang into Randi's eyes. Damn, she thought. First the pregnancy makes me emotional, and then he has to look at me like that! "I'm sorry, Kevin" she whispered, choking on her tears. "But at the time, I felt leaving was my only option. I know it was a selfish decision, but I wasn't exactly in the best frame of mind. I know that that doesn't excuse what I did, but-" Randi couldn't finish her sentence for the tears running down her face.
"I'm sorry. I shouldn't have brought it up," Kevin said in a pain-filled voice, holding Randi as she cried.
"I'm sorry, Kev" she sniffed when her tears stopped. "I always seem to be crying when you're around."
"Then we'll have to change that, won't we?" Kevin smiled. Randi didn't reply, but just stared at a spot on the wall. After awhile, Kevin ventured to ask another question. "So, you're pregnant, huh?" Randi looked at Kevin like he was a stupid two-year-old. "Yeah, I'm pregnant," she said shortly.
"Can I ask about the father?" Kevin forced himself to ask.
"I'd rather you didn't" Randi said.
Kevin was just about to say something else when he heard Nick exclaim, "Well, there you are Train! I was just about to give up and believe that you fell in the toilet!" Kevin whipped around to give Nick the evil eye.
"What?" he asked. Then he spotted Randi. "Oh. Hey, Randi!" he said, giving a little wave. "Uh, Kev, we sort of need you now. We're starting in 10 minutes."
Randi stood up. "Guess I can leave now" she said, shooting a look at Kevin. She looked at Nick when she heard a funny noise. His mouth was hanging open. "What's your problem, white boy," she asked.
"You're pregnant" he stammered.
"No shit, Sherlock. Any other brilliant observations?" Randi asked sarcastically.
"I, uh…. no, I guess not. When's the baby due?" Nick asked.
"March" she said shortly, walking towards the door. Hearing Kevin making some weird noise, she turned around. The only way to describe the look on his face is astute shock.
