Chapter Thirteen

At 5 o'clock, Randi awoke with a start. Kevin was still holding her as he slept. "Jesus!" she swore softly as she remembered passionately making love to Kevin. She gently moved his arm off of her and quietly got out of the bed. Thank God, they'd never turned the lights out, she thought as she easily found her own sweaty clothes and put them back on. Randi was about to walk out the door when she looked back at Kevin, who lay naked and sleeping on his bed. I can't go without leaving him some sort of explanation, she realized. Quietly, she found a piece of paper and wrote Kevin a note, which she left on the bed where she had been lying. And then Randi quietly slipped out of the room. Walking down the hallway, she felt surprised to feel tears rolling down her cheeks. Tears for the loss of a man she knew she couldn't keep. Randi walked outside into the cool Pittsburgh summer night. Turning in the direction of home, Randi walked, her shoulders shaking with silent sobs. Don't think about him, she told herself fiercely. But it seemed that she couldn't think of anything else. She saw Kevin grinning in her mind. Teasing the other guys. Holding her while she cried. Making love to her. With a muffled cry of pain, Randi began to run. She began counting, 1, 2, 1, 2…. Just keep running. Nothing matters except that you run, she commanded her mind. Yet her heart didn't seem to want to listen…
