One life to Live

Chapter One

"No!" Randi screamed into the phone, tears streaming down her face. "I don't believe you!" Sobbing, Randi Carey slammed down the phone. Blindly she ran to her room and frantically yanked her tennis shoes on. She tied the laces and ran out of her apartment, leaving her roommates staring in wonder as the phone began to ring.

Randi started running full speed toward the park, not even aware of where she was going. She just concentrated on breathing, the rhythm of her feet hitting the pavement, trying not to think. She soon arrived at the park, a large grassy area in the middle of one of Pittsburgh's many communities. It had a play area for the children, a basketball court, tennis courts, and a paved walkway all around it. Randi ran on the walkway, dodging to avoid children of skates, mothers pushing strollers, people walking their dogs. A few people yelled at her to slow down, but she paid them no attention. She had her own problems to think about, or, actually, to try not to think about. Her only thoughts were, keep running. Don't think. She chanted this over and over as she started around the park a second time, still running as if she was running to win a race, or running from danger or something that she didn't want to face.
