Chapter 30

(The next day)

It was the day of Justin and Katlyn’s first party they were having together. All the guys and their family were coming. The day was beautiful. About an hour before people started arriving, they started pulling out food and water toys to throw in the pool. Katlyn was wearing a pink flowered tankini that ended a few inches before her belly button and a pair of short-shorts. Justin was wearing a pair of tan cargo shorts with blue swim shorts under them.

Justin had started up the barbeque just as the doorbell rang. Katlyn ran through the house to get it.

“Hey!” Katlyn greeted JC and Lance with hugs. “You guys want to go help Justin? I don’t trust him with fire.” She joked.

They both laughed and walked into the backyard. Katlyn started putting drinks in a huge ice chest filled with ice and the doorbell rang again. This time it was most of Justin’s family. Lynn, Lisa, and Stephen all went to help Katlyn while Randy, Paul and Jonathan went into the backyard. Slowly the guests kept coming.

There was music playing. Jonathan, Tyler, and Stephen were running around and jumping in the pool. Justin, Randy, Chris, Johnny, and Trace were all working on the BBQ. JC, Lance, and Chris were talking at the table. Lynn, Lisa, and Tracey were all stretched out in the sun talking. Joey and Kelly were in the water with Brianna. Michelle and Jason were also talking, lying in the sun. Laura and Jackie were helping Katlyn with making salad and bringing everything outside. After finishing, Jacking and Laura joined in on JC, Lance and Chris’ conversation.

Katlyn wrapped an arm around Justin’s waist. “So how’s everything going over here?”

“We’re just finishing up with the hotdogs and hamburgers. People can start eating though.”

Katlyn kissed his cheek and walked away telling everyone the food was pretty much done.

After everyone was done eating, they went back to lounging in the sun. Justin and Katlyn stretched out under a tree.

“This was fun.” Katlyn smiled, leaning against Justin.

“Yeah, but if we decide to do this again, we’ll have to invite less people.”

Katlyn let out a small laugh. “Oh come on, Justin. Everyone here is important to us.”

“Yeah, but this is really too much.”

“You sound like an old man.”

“Thanks. Anyway, isn’t someone’s birthday coming up?”

Katlyn smiled widely. “That would be-“ Katlyn was cut off as cold water sprayed her. Justin had also jumped. Finally the water stopped.

Both Katlyn and Justin, now very wet, looked up to see Tyler, Jonathan, and Chris (K.) standing there with huge super-soakers.

“You three are going down!” Katlyn jumped up and started chasing them, Justin following.

Katlyn caught up to Chris and was able to pull him over to the pool and throw him in. Justin then grabbed Tyler and Jonathan and threw them in the water as well. Katlyn and Justin both high fived each other.

“It’s not over yet.” They heard someone say. Before they could turn around, they were both pushed into the water. When they surfaced they saw JC and Joey standing there.

“Oh! So you want to get involved?!” Justin pulled himself out of the pool and ran to grab the hose. He quickly turned it on, spraying them.

Katlyn took of her shorts so she was just in her bathing suit and threw the soaking wet pants on the lawn. They continued on with their games and eventually died down. A few were swimming around and some were still lounging.

Katlyn climbed out of the pool and patted through the house, leaving a trail of water behind her. She dried herself off and then changed into a pair of jeans and a black tank top. She then grabbed some extra towels to take them outside. She walked back into the yard. Justin was still in the water with Jon and Tyler hanging off of him. She sat down next to Laura at the table.

“She’s got that dreamy look on her face again.” Jackie laughed.

Katlyn lightly slapped her arm. “Once again, you’re just jealous.”

“Jealous? Of you and your crazy heartthrob boyfriend? Yeah…right.”

“I have to give you credit, Kate. I thought he would have driven you out of the house by now.” Lance commented.

“He’s not that bad.”

“Oh, but he is.” Chris added.

“Let her live in her dream world.” Laura laughed.

“Why? In a week she’s going to be running to us saying she can’t take it anymore.” JC joked.

“I’m still sitting at the table!” Katlyn said annoyed.

“Oops, sorry…didn’t see ya there, Kate-Kate.” Chris joked patting her head.

“I can’t believe I’m friends with you guys. I think I know whose being cut from the party list next time.” Katlyn rolled her eyes dramatically fore effect.

“Kate?” She heard a young voice say.

Katlyn looked down to see Stephen standing there. “Yes, Stephen?”

“Mommy said I had to ask you for something to drink.”

Katlyn stood up. “What do you want?”

“Apple juice.”

“Ok, lets go get you some then.” She took his small hand and led him into the house.

A few minutes later they walked back out. Katlyn saw Michelle and Jason walking hand in hand to the side of the house. Katlyn let go of Stephen’s hand and walked over to the pool, grabbing a towel. “Justin!”

Justin turned around. “What?”

“Come here.” Katlyn said waving her hand.

“Kate, can it wait? I’m playing here.”

“Justin, get out of the water now.”

Justin pouted and swam over to the side of the pool and got out. “Yes, mom.”

She handed him the towel. “Michelle and Jason just went to the side of the house.”

“So…”

“They’re probably going to go make out.”

“So let them have some fun.” Justin said drying off.

“Fun? That’s my fifteen-year-old sister. Go interrupt them and make them come back over here.”

“Why don’t you go?”

“Because she will hate me.”

“And she won’t hate me?” Justin smirked.

“But she’s my sister, so she’d hate me more.”

“Jason already thinks I’m crazy.”

“So does the rest of the world…now go.”

“Katlyn-“

“Justin, please?” She pouted and took a step closer, placing her hand on his chest. “For me?”

“Not fair.” Justin took a step back and wrapped the towel around his waist. “Not fair at all. You have that damn power over me.” Justin grumbled walking away.

“Yes I do, and I enjoy it very much.” Katlyn laughed.

Justin walked around the house and saw Michelle and Jason kissing.

“Hey, sorry to interrupt, but…”Justin thought of what to say. “We were just about to bring the ice cream out. We were looking for you two.”

“Ok, we’ll be there in a minute.” Jason said.

“Well, uh…Katlyn wants everyone there now.” Justin said quickly.

“Um…ok.” Jason said taking Michelle’s hand and started to walk away.

Michelle turned around. “Katlyn?” She mouthed.

Justin nodded and followed them.

“Lets go get the ice cream.” Justin said to Katlyn.

“Now?”

“That was my excuse for getting them out of there.”

“Ice cream? That was your excuse?”

“Could you have come up with a better one?” Justin challenged.

“Yes.” Katlyn walked into the house. “Ice cream?”

“Ok, Kate. I’m sorry. I made a stupid mistake.” Justin smiled at her.

Katlyn pulled out the gallons of ice cream while Justin pulled out the toppings.

“Katlyn, what is your problem?!” Katlyn turned around to see Michelle.

“What? I’m just getting the ice cream out.”

“Sending Justin to come drag us back.”

“What do you mean ‘sending Justin’?”

“You had Justin follow us to the side of the house because you knew we were going to kiss and had him give a stupid excuse for being there.”

“I did not make Justin do anything.”

“Then why did Justin say it was your idea?”

Katlyn turned to Justin, who was trying to sneak away. “Oh no you don’t.” She grabbed his still bare arm and pulled him back next to her.

“I plead the fifth. No matter what I say, someone’s going to be mad at me.”

“You told her it was my idea?” Katlyn asked.

“Well…hey, the ice cream is going to melt, maybe I should take it outside.”

Michelle blocked his way. “Tell her so I can be mad at her.”

Justin turned and looked at Katlyn. “Kate, I ever tell you how sexy that whole ‘I hate you-you’re not sleepin’ in the same bed with me’ look is?”

Michelle turned around and walked away. “I’m a big girl, Kate, stop treating me like a baby.”

Katlyn slapped Justin’s arm. “You told her that was my idea?! I would have gone myself if I wanted her to hate me!”

“I never really said anything, I just sort of nodded when she asked.”

Katlyn started carrying the ice cream outside and set it on the table then walked back in the house and up the stairs into their room.

“Kate, where are you going?” Justin asked following her.

“You were right about one thing, Justin.” Katlyn said simply.

Justin stopped walking. “What?”

“The ‘you’re not sleeping in the same bed with me’ look was right.” She grabbed her pillow and her walk man and walked down the hall to the furthest room away from Justin’s and set her things on that bed.

“Kate, stop. You’re making a big thing out of nothing.”

“My sister hates me.”

“No she doesn’t, she’s just a little mad.” Justin reasoned.

“A little mad? This was the same sister who stopped talking to me for three years!”

“Kate, I’m sorry, ok?” Katlyn walked out of the room and back down the stairs, but Justin stopped her half way, grabbing her around the waist. “She’s not going to hate you for three years.”

Katlyn pushed against his bare chest. “You couldn’t have just stayed with the ice cream story?” She continued walking down the stairs.

“Kate, you really need to loosen up.”

Before she had time to react, Justin picked her up and carried her into the backyard, stopping at the pool. “Maybe this will help.” And with that he threw her in.

Once she surfaced she wiped the hair off her face and gave him a blank stare. “I take that back…YOU are sleeping somewhere else.” She climbed out of the pool, her clothes clinging to her.

The party ended a few house later and everyone slowly left.

Katlyn marched up the stairs and back to their room. She grabbed two pillows and a blanket and threw them out the door towards Justin.

“Katlyn, sweetie, I’m sorry.” Justin pleaded.

She just turned her back and walked back in the room. Justin grabbed her wrist and turned her around, holding her around the waist to keep her from moving. “I’m sorry for telling Michelle that it was your idea and I’m sorry for throwing you in the pool.” He leaned down to kiss her but she stepped back and turned around again.

“You’re still not sleeping in here.” She changed into her pajamas and crawled into the large bed by herself.
