"This is just great."

"God Chris, could you pick a worse time?"

Chris scribbled 'It's not my fault' on a piece of paper and held it up for the others.

"Yeah guys, you can't chose when you get tonsillitis," Lance said, standing up for Chris.

"Haha, you have to get a surgery, you have to get a surgery…" Justin sang, dancing around the mute Chris.

"That's an operation, dumbass," Joey corrected. "He has to get an operation."

They were in Pittsburgh, PA, and tonight they were supposed to have a concert. But Chris's sore throat turned out to be Tonsillitis, and the doctor scheduled an operation in a few hours. Now Chris could no longer talk, and communicated slowly by writing his sentences on paper.

J.C. sat looking over the paper work Chris was suppose to take to the hospital with him. "Hey, guess what?" he exclaimed.

"What?" Joey asked.

"My uncle is doing Chris's surgery! I'll get to see him!" J.C. smiled.

"Hey, isn't that great Chris?" Joey laughed, slapping Chris on the back. "A Chasez is gonna be ripping your throat out!"

Chris rolled his eyes and wrote, 'Lord have mercy.'

The guys dragged Chris in the hospital by his shirt collar. He put up a good fight, and they were all tired. They had just been lucky that Chris couldn't scream.

At first the guys couldn't tell how scared Chris was about the surgery. But the minute he got in the car and started trembling, it went down hill from there. Once they had drug the twenty-eight-year-old into the hospital, he calmed down a little. He calmed down a lot once he saw the nurse's assistant that would be taking care of him. She had long brown hair and beautiful hazel eyes. She was a few years younger than he was, and shorter. But Chris didn't mind that at all.

By the time Chris was ready for surgery, he was using her first name, Alicia. He cursed himself for not being able to flatter her properly; paper just didn't cut it in the world of flirting. But Alicia liked him, a lot, and was giddy to be taking care of him. J.C. was the only other guy with Chris, and he was too busy talking to his uncle to notice the relationship forming between the two.

Alicia was out of the room getting supplies, and the doctor came over to Chris, intending to start the IV. Chris's smile faded instantly when he saw the huge needle the doctor thought he was going to stick in Chris's arm. His frightened eyes grew big, and jumped out of the bed as the doctor got closer.

"Now Mr. Kirkpatrick, get back in the bed. This isn't going to hurt for long, I'll give you a numbing shot first," the doctor coaxed.

Chris shook his head and kept backing up until he ran into the wall. There was something about needless that scared the shit out of him.

"Chris, it's not going to hurt. Just let him do it," J.C. said, feeling like he was talking to a little kid.

Chris nodded and didn't budge. Then Alicia walked in and saw Chris trying to blend into the wall. "What's going on?" she asked, looking at the others.

"He's afraid of the needle," J.C. said, teasing Chris.

Alicia turned her soft eyes to Chris. "Will you let me do it?"

Chris thought for a moment, then slowly nodded his head.

"Okay. I swear I won't hurt you. Just get back in the bed and relax."

Chris obeyed, and she took the needle from the doctor. Alicia kept her eyes on Chris as she tied the rubber tube around his bicep, making the veins visible. "Okay, now your going to feel a little prick, but no big deal, okay?" she asked.

Chris took a deep breath and concentrated on the numb feeling in his hand. He didn't dare watch as she quickly stuck the needle in his vein, then taped it down. "See? It's over," she smiled, making sure the blood flowed through the tube okay.

He gulped as he felt his own warm blood flow through the tube and down his arm to the IV.

"Okay now, we're going to give you a muscle relaxant," the doctor said, injecting a clear fluid in the IV.

Chris didn't even realize how tense he was until now. His muscles ached, and he found himself slowly relaxing. Alicia smiled warmly as she said, "Okay, now count backward starting at 100." She had to stop her self from telling him to speak it.

'99…98…97…'

Chris woke up with an ache in his throat. The first thing he remembered was that he only made it to 97. Then he realized the others were in chairs around him, sleeping. Chris picked up a magazine from beside the bed and threw it at Justin.

Justin woke up and looked around. "Oh, it was only you. Goodnight," he teased, pretending to go back to sleep.

Chris sighed, and Justin opened his eyes again. He woke up the others and they all asked how he was doing, although silence was their only answer. "You know Justin, maybe you should get your tonsils out," Lance teased. "It would be a whole lot peaceful."

"Haha," Justin said sarcastically.

Then Alicia walked in and told the others to leave. "He need his rest if you guys want to get back in the road," she reasoned. Plus she wanted to talk to Chris alone.

Once the others had left, Chris held up his piece of paper. It read, 'Dinner some night?'

Alicia smiled. "You beat me to it."
