Snowed In
Author's note- Happy Birthday Veronica!
Year 2000
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Veronica was so happy she couldn't sit still. Tonight was the Nsync concert, and this time she had been lucky enough to win tickets from the radio, and she would be driving herself. Her friend, Erin, had gotten tickets over the Internet the day they went on sale, and the two friends were going to meet at the concert.
The wind was incredibly strong as Veronica drove down the highway, but she could tell she was getting close because more and more cars that passed her had Nsync posters taped to the sides of the cars. Veronica sang along with the radio, and it was celebrating the concert that was less than three hours away. When Bye Bye Bye went off, they came on with the weather report, announcing that they city would be hit with a large snowstorm soon. Luckily, the concert was inside, so the weather wouldn't affect them at all.
But she was wrong. Suddenly, a huge snowstorm broke lose, dumping tons of pure white snow down to the earth. 'Not again,' Veronica sighed, turning on the windshield wipers. Cars had slowed to forty miles an hour, and the road was already becoming dangerously slick.
Up ahead, two cars skidded and slid into each other, causing a five-car pile up that looked serious. 'Shit,' Veronica mumbled. Now, for the second time, she would miss Nsync's concert and it was too dangerous to try to travel the forty minutes back home. She spotted an exit ramp, with food and hotel symbols on the sign.
Cursing to herself, she veered to the right and took the icy exit to a run-down hotel.
"Hello?" Veronica called, stepping in the seemingly empty hotel. She looked around as she closed the door behind her, steeping in the hotel further.
A short, bearded man with spectacles stepped out form behind the dusty counter and smiled. "Hello there missy, what can I do for you this cold night?"
"Well, nothing that could make me happy," Veronica mumbled, tremendously disappointed at having to miss the concert. "I guess I just need a room for the night, since driving home is next to impossible."
"Well I have rooms," the old man smiled, pulling out a logbook. They're only twenty five dollars a night."
"I'll take it," she sighed, pulling out the money she was suppose to use for shirts and drinks at the concert.
As she stepped closer, the man noticed her Nsync dog tag and shirt. "Are you a fan of those so-called, 'boybands'?" he asked, looking closer at her shirt.
"One of the biggest," Veronica replied. "I was on my way to the concert but then this snow storm started up and there was an accident on top of that."
"Well look at the bright side," the man replied. "Those boys probably won't make it either, so you're not going to miss anything."
Veronica smiled, tucking some of her shoulder-length brown hair behind her ear. "What's your name?" she asked.
"I’m Bill," he replied, taking her money and making notes in his book.
"Well Bill, I'm Veronica," she said, shaking his hand. "Nice to meet you."
"Likewise."
A rumbling outside caught their attention, and Veronica went to the window as Bill looked for the key to her room. She peered through the blinds, wishing her soft brown eyes could see through the thickness of the massive snowstorm outside. She could faintly make out a large shape stopping in the parking lot, then some figures running through the snow towards the building.
Veronica let the blinds go shut again and headed over to the counter to retrieve the key from Bill. The chime on the door sounded as it opened, letting a gust of cold air and snow breeze through the small lobby. Veronica didn't bother turning around, figuring it was just more fans.
But as she took the key and her receipt from Bill, she noticed him looking from her shirt to the people behind her. He got a big smile on his face and looked in her eyes. "I think there's someone here you might want to meet."
Veronica felt a wave of excitement sweep through her before she even turned around. Slowly and wearily, she turned to face the newcomers.
"Hey," Justin said, smiling and waving as the group of singers stood inside the door.
Veronica suddenly felt very hot, despite the blizzard the raged outside. She smiled the brightest smile she had ever made, then turned back to Bill. "Is that really Nsync standing there, or is there some kind of snow mirage, like a desert mirage, because this is the best day of my life if the guys are really standing over there-"
"It's really them," Bill smiled, lightened by her excitement.
"Oh my God," she whispered, turning around again. "Hey," she stuttered, swallowing.
"Mind if we spend the night here with ya?" Justin asked as the group moved away from the door.
"Uh, no, go ahead," Veronica said, frozen to her spot in front of Bill. The smile would not leave, and she wasn't sure she wanted it to.
"Does it snow like this often?" Joey asked, throwing his duffel bag on a chair.
"Uh, no, I don’t think so," Veronica said, watching Justin walk to the counter right beside her. He was so real; she could even smell his cologne and see every individual curly hair on his head. They wandered through the lobby, Chris and Joey sitting on the old, worn couch as Lance and J.C. set their bags down by the counter.
"We'll need five rooms for tonight," Justin said to Bill. Then he looked at her. "So were you going to the concert?"
"Uh, yeah," Veronica replied, nodding her head.
"Duh," Chris interrupted. "Look at her shirt."
Justin shot him a look, then returned his gaze to Veronica. "We were too, but since we're here with you, I guess there isn't going to be one tonight."
Veronica lost herself in his sparkling blue eyes. Here was a person she had only seen in posters and on TV, where the closest she could get would be thousands of miles away. Now he was here, inches away from her.
"You did it again," Joey laughed. "You froze her with your super powers!"
Veronica smiled, shaking herself from her thoughts. "Sorry, I just can't believe you're here, with me."
"Believe it," J.C. said. "We're gonna be here all night with you too."
Veronica choked on her spit as J.C. spoke of a fantasy she often lost herself in.
Bill handed Justin some keys and a receipt. "Thanks," Justin smiled, handing one to Lance and J.C. before tossing the other two to Chris and Joey. "After we put our stuff down, meet back here for some practice," Justin announced, including Veronica.
"O- okay," Veronica smiled, trying to find her purse with out looking down. She watched them go, then turned to Bill. "Oh my God!" she shrieked.
"Looks like you're gonna get your concert after all," Bill smiled.
"…And God must have spent, a little more time, on you…"
Nsync finished off the song softly, then looked to Veronica for approval. Her smile never left her face through the whole song. The guys had not only taken their pictures with her and signed autographs, but now they were singing acapella for her and Bill. Veronica's heart was racing, and she wanted the time to go as slow as it possibly could. She was burning this memory into her mind so she would never forget it, soaking up every detail.
Chris looked at the cuckoo clock behind the counter and yawned. "As much as I'm enjoying this, I'm dead. Mind if I turn in early?"
"Not at all," Joey said. "I'm thinking of that myself."
Veronica smiled as they parted, being sure to say goodnight to her on the way by. "Goodnight guys," she replied. "Thanks for doing this for me."
"No problem," Justin smiled, sitting on the couch next to her. "We live to for our fans."
Veronica began to get uncomfortable, being this close to a multimillionaire with a damn good voice and hot enough to burn someone. "Well, I guess I'll be going to bed now too."
"Okay, me too," Justin said, getting up with her. He picked up on her uneasiness and figured she had enough to brag about. She started to go, when he got an idea. "Hey, Veronica," he called.
She turned, curiously. "Yes?"
Justin put his hands behind his neck, fumbling with his gold Nsync necklace. When he had the clasp undone, he handed it to her. "Here, I want you to have this," he smiled.
"I can't take this," she started, looking in his eyes.
"I'm giving it to you, for being so special," Justin said, placing it in her warm hand.
Veronica smiled. "Thank you," she replied.
"We'll probably be gone before you wake up, and I want you to have some thing to remember this time by," Justin said.
"Believe me, I'll remember this," Veronica said, feeling the necklace with her fingers.
"Well, I guess I'll see you tomorrow night," Justin smiled. "For the concert."
"You bet," Veronica replied. She walked to the counter and scribbled her phone number on a piece of paper. "Here, give me a call anytime," she said, handing the paper to Justin.
Justin read the number in his mind. "I will," he said, smiling as they walked to each of their rooms.
