"And when we return from the break, we will show you footage from a natural child birth-"
"Okay, that's enough PBS for today!" Joey said, grabbing the remote and changing the channel. He landed on the news, where they were still talking about yesterday's mini earthquake.
"Does child birth make you uncomfortable?" Chris asked teasingly.
"Seeing a woman squeeze a kid through her- yes, it does make me uncomfortable," Joey said, stopping himself.
"You know, women do more down there then pleasure you," J.C. said, not looking up from his came of checkers he was playing with Justin.
"Guys, can we not talk about this?" Justin asked, jumping J.C.'s red piece.
"We need to be going anyway if we're gonna make it to the dry cleaners with Lance," Chris said, getting up.
"Why'd he have to go ahead of us?" Justin asked. "I wasn't really paying attention."
"I don't know, I think he likes the chick that works there," Chris replied.
The others got ready and soon they were on their way to the elevator. The hotel they were at was in the center of the city, and it hosted a wide variety of people. The guys had gone shopping the other day when a small earthquake hit, but all the other San Diego natives were used to it. Lance just wanted to buy something that had to be dry-cleaned so he would have a reason to flirt the girl that worked there.
Justin ran ahead and pushed the button on the elevator, something he would never outgrow. The others caught up with him and stood silently, waiting for the elevator. It dinged and opened, letting three people out before the guys went in. Justin quickly pushed the down button, beating Joey by a second.
Chris looked next to him and found a very pretty young woman, who, as he noticed next, was pregnant. Very pregnant.
"You wanna play rough?" Joey asked, grinning at Justin.
"Yeah, I do," Justin replied.
Joey hit the button again, and then Justin pounded it to get back. The two quickly started a button fight, seeing who could pound it the fastest.
Suddenly, the elevator began to shake violently. The lights went off, and the emergency light flickered as the elevator shook its passengers harshly. The building rumbled around them, and they realized it was an earthquake. They all fell to the floor, the shaking preventing them from standing up again as the elevator screeched down the hotel's elevator shaft.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
When the elevator finally stopped falling, it stopped between two floors. And from the looks of thing inside, and the sound of things outside, they could tell they were gonna be stuck for a while.
"Is everyone okay?" Chris asked, picking himself up off the floor.
"What the hell happened?" J.C. asked, helping the pregnant woman up.
"Earthquake," Chris replied. The red emergency light was lit, but a lot of good that would do them stuck in the small elevator car.
"Can you pry the doors open?" Joey asked.
Chris tried, even though he knew it was impossible. "No," he said, straining against the steel doors.
"Haha, you broke it," Justin teased, poking Joey.
"I did not, you did," Joey replied, smacking Justin.
"Uh, guys," the woman interrupted. They followed her gaze to a large wet spot on the floor. "I think we may soon have six people in here."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"How far along are you?" J.C. asked, yelling over the loud drilling sound outside.
"The contractions are about four minutes apart," she replied, breathing calmly. Joey took one look at her and shrank back against the wall, already turning white. "I don’t suppose any of you took a child birth class," she said, sighing.
"We’re singers, not doctors," Justin said.
"I know who you are," she replied, breathing heavily. "But you're gonna have to do."
"I don't think so," Chris said. "They'll get us out by then."
"Haven't you watched TV lately? The story always goes like this, where the no-experience guys deliver the baby, they become heroes, and everything is fine."
"This isn't TV," Justin replied.
"You're gonna have to do," she groaned, getting through another contraction. "From the sound of it, they're having to dig their way to us."
Chris tried to open the door once more. Nope, still stuck. Crap.
"Okay, we can do this," J.C. said, taking a deep breath. "No big deal. Just catch it, right?"
The woman glared at him. "If that's the way you put it, then yes."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So, while we're getting so personal, why don't you tell us your name?" J.C. asked, sitting beside the woman.
"I'm Nicole," she replied. Her contractions were getting closer together, and there was still no sign of a rescue.
"Well Nicole, I'm pleased to meet you. We're Nsync," Chris smiled, sitting on the other side of J.C.
They were lined up along the back wall of the elevator, praying someone would rescue them in time. Justin was beside Chris, and Joey hid behind Justin in the corner. They listened to her heavy breathing and soft moans as she went through another contraction. "You know," she started, pushing her sweaty bang from her forehead, "One of you will have to get over here and help me."
"Chris, you're the oldest, you do it," Justin said.
"No, you're the youngest, you need experience," Chris argued.
"I'll do it," J.C. said, almost against his will. "But you two gotta help me."
J.C. rubbed his sweaty palms on his pants as he swung his body around to face Nicole. "Okay, I can do this, no big deal, nothing I haven't seen before…" he said, taking a deep breath.
"Yeah, except a new born baby," Justin mumbled as he and Chris kneeled beside Nicole.
Nicole looked at J.C. "What are you waiting for? I'm in pain here, and right now, you're the only male grown up enough to help me."
J.C. swallowed, then nodded quickly. Luckily, she was wearing a dress and he quickly lifted it up. 'If she doesn't have a problem with it, neither do I,' he told himself. She helped him take her underwear off, J.C. growing redder the whole time.
Nicole noticed his uneasiness and said, "Relax. This is strictly business."
J.C. managed a smile, then glanced down between her open legs. If he had any thoughts of sex in the near future, they all disappeared. The baby was beginning to crown, and he almost marveled at the sight.
Another contraction took hold, and Nicole reached out and grabbed Chris. She clamped her hand on his until the contraction was over, or dulled until it wasn't so bad.
"Oh my God, I think my hand is broken!" Chris exclaimed, surprised at her strength.
She still held onto him, only relaxing a little. "Trust me, that didn't hurt as much as it will," she smiled.
"Justin, come here and look at this," J.C. said, motioning.
"Do I have to?" Justin whined.
"Get over here," J.C. ordered. "How many times are you going to witness the miracle of child birth?"
Justin sighed and went over next to J.C. He glanced at her quickly. "Okay, yup, that's a miracle all right."
"Joey, come here," J.C. said.
"I don’t think I can," Joey replied.
"It's the only way to prove to you how great this is," J.C. said. "Now come on."
Joey slowly picked himself up and went over to the others. He managed a quick look, then a longer one. "Hey, you know, that isn't so bad," he smiled. "I thought it was going to be all bloody and everything."
"It's not born yet," Nicole said, straining as she cut off Chris's circulation.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Oh my God, I think it's coming!" Nicole yelled, pushing. She had her hand wrapped around Chris's so hard; he could no longer feel his fingers.
"I think so too," J.C. agreed, watching the head get bigger and bigger. Another hour had gone by with out any sign of rescue. 'The earthquake must have done a lot of damage,' J.C. told himself.
"I swear to God I will have the safest sex in the world," Chris begged, trying to pry his hand loose from her iron grip.
"I think one more good push should have it," J.C. said, watching the baby's head come almost fully out.
"I don't think I can," Nicole panted, leaning against the wall. Outside, the buzzing and hammering grew louder, but not to the doors yet.
"You have to," J.C. replied, looking at her tired face.
Joey watched from his safe distance in the corner, and Justin watched beside J.C. Chris lay on the floor in exaggerated pain, thinking his hand was thoroughly crushed. Nicole took a deep breath and gave one last, strong push. She tightened her grip on Chris's mangled hand again, giving her all to having this baby.
A smiled lit J.C. and Justin's face as J.C. gently giddied the baby out, cradling it in his arms. The baby began crying instantly, and it shook as it flexed its tiny, blood-covered arms. Nicole dropped Chris's hand as J.C. handed the small newborn to its mother. Even Joey got a relieved smile as the healthy baby's cries rang out in the elevator.
"Oh my God," Nicole smiled, cradling the baby in her arms. "We did it," she said, looking at each of the guys.
"Actually, you did it," J.C. smiled. "Congratulations."
Nicole smiled. "J.C., do you mind if I name the baby after you?"
J.C. smiled and looked at the others. "I don't mind at all," he replied.
Light peeked through a crack between the elevator doors as men outside pried them open. "Well guys," Nicole said, turning the baby so they could all see it, "Meet Slyder Scott Selchert."
