Prologue: It Starts
Justin Timberlake was 19 years old, the biggest pop star of the world and a
sex symbol extrodanaire. To the average joe, he had no worries. But to his
mother, his 4 "brothers" and his company, he had Bone Marrow Lukemia.
Justin had been diganoised with BML when he was 11. His mother had wanted to
take him off MMC, but Justin would have none of it. He didn't want to leave
his extended family; Lynn Harless had no choice but to let him coutinue. In
the end, it was a good decsion, when his Chemotherapy Treatments made him
extremely sick, JC Chasez held his head as he threw up. When he lost his
curly hair from Radiation, Britney Spears gave him a bandanna to cover his
head and when he became so weak he could barely walk, Christina Aguilera
gave him a wagon to be pulled around on. Two years he had gone through it
and then the doctor said it was in remission and hopefully never to return.
They were joyful.
Then, 2 days after his 19th birthday, things began happening, bruises for no
reason, throwing up, tired, weakness and all the signs.
Crying, he went to his mom.
"I think it is back mama."
Part 1: Don't Cry For Me
Justin sat on the cold examining table, groaning. The other 4 members of
NSYNC and his mom sat in various places among the room. JC and his mother
sat at his side waiting nervously, Lance was busy pacing for the whole room,
Chris was sitting behind Justin rubbing his shoulders and Joey was
pre-occupied with a pamphlet of the female reproductive system for
teenagers. The group members were quiet, waiting for the results of their
friend and brother's results. It was scary to think that Justin could
actully have something that could kill him. Chris sighed and rubbed Justin's
hair. He had spent all of last night going over this on the net. BML usually
struck kids between the ages of 5-11. And like all bone marrow dieases you
needed a direct match or you would never be cured. But with like all
cancers, you are never completely cured, only in remission. All these
thoughts were running through his head as Lynn Harless looked at him. Out of
all the Nsync members, Chris was her favorite other than Justin. She loved
JC, but he was just too serious at times. Lance was sweet, but too attached
to his mother to get close to her and of course Joey was Joey. But Chris was
different; he was warm funny and had a great heart. He was a truly wonderful
young man.
Her thoughts were broken when a young woman opened the door and entered. She
was young and very pretty; she was wearing a nametag that said "L. Myka" She
smiled at Justin and greeted them.
"Hello, I am Dr. Lacey Myka. I will be Justin's doctor."
Lynn smiled back "Can you please tell me what is going on?"
The doctor frowned and watched as the 4 young men in the room migrated
towards Justin, she espcially noticed one with short dark hair who had been
rubbing Justin's shoulders hug him tightly. She wondered briefly if they
were dating. Shaking her head, she answered Mrs. Harless's question.
"I am afraid that the results were not good. Justin has come out of
remission. His cancer has returned."
Part 2: I Think I'm Alone Now
The silence was broken with Lynn's voice. "What happens now?"
Dr. Myka sighed "Well right now, I need these 4 young men to come with me
and give blood so we can see if they are a match for Justin. Mrs. Harless I
need you to call Justin's father and have him tested and have his doctor fax
the results to me."
Lynn nodded. "I will have my husband get tested too."
Dr. Myka nodded. "We should have the results tomorrow. Today, I want to do a
bone marrow scraping and see how bad of a Lukemia we are dealing with. If it
is not too bad then we will go ahead with the transplant, IF anyone matches
today. If it is too bad, I will start Chemotherapy treatments to kill some
of it and then do the transplant."
Chris was the only one brave enough to voice his opinion. "What happens if
none of us match?"
Dr. Myka sighed. "Then we go out for a search. But, those are, well, those
are never strong odds."
Chris sighed and ran his fingers through Justin's hair again. He was well
aware of that. Lynn looked at Chris and decided that it was time for him and
Justin to have some quiet time.
"Okay, I am going to go make my calls. Lance, Joey, JC, go give blood. Chris,
would you watch Justin?"
Chris nodded and waited for everyone to leave while JC muttering something
about needles before Chris took Justin in his arms and hugged him tight,
letting him sob.
"Oh Fuck Chris, I am going to die! I never thought this would be what killed
me, but it is! It's is going to kill me!"
Chris hugged him tighter. "No Just, this is not going to kill you. I won't
let it. I promise, shhh."
Justin looked at Chris. "How can you stop it, no one can, but God. And he
wants to kill me."
Chris just held on to Justin, trying to make sense as to why this was
happening.
Part 3: Time After Time
The members of Nsync were sitting on hard wooden benches waiting for Dr.
Myka. She was going to do Justin's scraping and wanted someone present with
Justin, so everyone had elected Chris. JC had politley bowed out when he heard
about the giant needle and Lance & Joey felt that Chris should be there. Chris
sighed, remembering the events of the last two hours. After he had gotten
Justin calmed down, he had sat with JC who was being a baby about being
stuck with a needle. He had gotten blood drawn as well and after that they
had been waiting for the doctor.
She finally entered, looking grim. "Ready Justin?"
Justin nodded and turned to Chris, who took his hand and led him into the
room.
Chris helped Justin lay down on the cold bed and and held his hand tightly.
Justin hadn't done this since he was 11, and Chris knew it had to feel all new and he was
probably scared shitless.
Dr. Myka sat at Justin's feet and pulled a small table closer.
"Okay, Justin, just relax and take a deep breath. This is going to be
painful. If you want I can explain what I am doing."
Justin nodded and grasped Chris's hand. Chris smiled and mouthed encouraging
words. Justin felt the first prick in his thigh bone and then a sudden
searing pain as she scraped it. Tears streamed down his face as Chris ran his hands through Justin's
curls and coutinued to mouth encouraging words.
"Okay Justin, I know it hurts, it's alright. So far I have just injected you
with a little dye to see what I am doing as I scrape the bone. I know it is
painful, but it will all be over soon."
Justin nodded and squeezed Chris's hands tightly. Chris coutinued to mouth
encouraging words and rub his curls. This was hard for Chris; he loved Justin
and this was just killing him.
"Okay, all finished. I would be careful walking, you will be stiff for
awhile."
Justin smiled weakly at her and Chris helped him out the door and into the
room. Everyone watched quietly as they went, knowing they needed alone time.
2 days later
Chris had been sitting with Justin for the last hour. The doctor had called
and said she had great news, but Justin had not been home so she would call back
at 4. It was now 3:45 and they wanted to know. Justin was pacing wearily.
"God Chris, what if it is worse than we thought, what if I am doomed? I,I,I
can't think. I gotta leave!"
Chris grabbed Justin and sat him down. "Please be calm. She will call soon!"
As the words left Chris's mouth, the phone rang. Chris jumped up and grabbed
the phone "Hello? Oh hi! How are you. Yes, okay." Chris turned to Justin. "Would you
please go pick up the other phone?"
Justin ran into the kitchen yanked the kitchen phone up and pressed it to
his ear. "Okay I am on."
Dr. Myka sighed "Okay, Justin, you have BML, no question. It is not that
serious, but before it gets any worse, I want to do a transplant. I have a
donor."
Justin gasped. "Who is it?"
She sighed again. "Chris."
Part 4: One Sweet Day
Chris stared at the 4 shocked faces of Lynn, JC, Joey & Lance.
"WHAT?" shouted JC. "YOU?"
Chris nodded and buried his head in his hands. "Please guys, this is hard
enough, don't make it harder!"
Lynn rubbed her hand over her face. This was very tiring. When Chris said he
was the match she almost jumped for joy, but when JC had heard he was angry.
He wanted to be the hero this time, and again, he wasn't nothing more than a
prop.
Chris had wanted nothing more for JC than to be the match. He loved Justin, but
this was scary. What if it didn't take and Justin died, it would be his
fault. That was too much on him. And now all these people were staring at
him like he was a hero, he couldn't take it.
"I am not doing it!" Chris said quickly and ran out the doors.
Lynn got up and chased after him. When she caught him she asked, "What do you mean you
won't do it?"
Chris took one look at Lynn and burst into tears. "I,I, don't want to do it
because if Justin dies it will be my fault. It will be on my head, I
couldn't live like that."
Lynn hugged Chris tightly and rocked him gently. "Oh poor baby, it will all
be okay."
Chris smiled through his tears and found strength in her words. He WOULD do
it. He would save Justin because Justin was his friend and he wanted Justin
to live. He smiled at Lynn. "Lets set up an appoinment."
Two days later
"Okay Justin, everything will be fine, you are going to be fine," Lynn told
her frightened son.
"I know mom, but still."
Lynn smiled and sped up with the gurney. Don't worry, I will be there when
you wake up."
Justin rolled away from his mother and next to Chris in the Surgerical ward.
Chris was already half asleep when Justin got there.
Chris turned to Justin with sleepy eyes. "Just, I gotta tell ya something
before I am out. I want you to know that nothing bad is going to happen and
when you wake up, we are going to be great."
Justin smiled as the sedatives started to take over. "I know. Nothing wrong
will happen." Justin smiled sleepily. "We are NSYNC FOREVER."
With that, they drifted off to sleep.
2 hours later
Dr Myka entered the room to find 4 very anxious people. She smiled at their
faces. "They are fine, the operation was a sucess."
