Wanna Be a DJ?
“Miss Fairborn?"
“Yes?”
“You have made it to the final part of our DJ screening, congratulations!”
“Oh my gosh, really? Thank you so much!” Edi exclaimed, jumping up. Her blue/gray eyes lit up with excitement. This is what she always dreamed of, becoming a DJ for her favorite radio station.
“Now the final part is what we will pay attention to the most. It shows how us how you handle yourself when interviewing a band or singers. We’ll have you go in that room in a minute and you will interview someone, pretending they’re a popular band and you’re on the radio, okay?”
Edi swallowed. She wasn’t good at keeping a straight face or not blushing around the popular kids at school, how could she pull this off? “I think I can handle it,” she lied.
“Good. We’ll get you in a minute, when we’re done setting up.”
“Okay.” Edi tried to relax as she sat in the leather chair in the hall. She had beaten 20 other teenagers that had tried out, and she could tell the other DJs liked her. Now she only had one more test, then hopefully she would become a DJ herself. That meant free tickets to all the concerts, listening to music all day long, and hopefully making good friends. It was the dream job, if she could get it.
“Okay Edi, we’re ready for you,” the woman DJ called.
Edi stood up, took a deep breath, and walked into the room. Then she gasped.
“Hi,” Edi said, stumbling over her whirling thoughts.
“Hi,” the group of guys replied in unison.
“You’re…you’re Nsync,” she stuttered, turning red.
“And you want to be a DJ,” Justin smiled, his eyes purple through his sunglasses.
“I think I’m in the wrong room,” Edi replied. “I was suppose to interview someone pretending they were popular.”
“Right room,” Joey smiled.
“Right people,” Chris added.
“Right,” Edi sighed. Her heart was pounding and she looked to her left and saw the two other DJs smiling to themselves. “Okay then, let’s get started,” she said, taking a deep breath as she sat down in front of the bubbly group.
They smiled back at her. “We’re ready. Hit me with your best shot,” Chris teased.
“Okay, um, so how has the release of No Strings Attached changed your popularity?”
“Well I think it’s made people realize that we’re more than just another boyband and that we do have feelings,” J.C. said, taking control.
Edi waited for the others to add on, but Lance just looked around the room, Joey and Chris were hitting each other, and Justin was cleaning his purple sunglasses.
“Okay, Justin,” Edi started, getting his attention. “Is it true you perm your hair?”
“What? Where’d you hear that?” Justin asked as the others started laughing.
“Yeah he does,” Lance said, watching Justin get red.
“No I don’t!” he defended.
“Are you guys going to be working with any other band or singers in the future?” Edi asked.
“Probably, but not too soon. We’re going on tour,” J.C. replied.
Edi tucked her reddish brown hair behind one ear, searching for another question in her head. She glanced at the DJs, who looked happy so far. “So Lance, how’s Toby?”
Lance smiled. “He’s fine.”
‘Okay, that wasn’t the best question,’ Edi thought, blushing. “Are you guys working on a new video?” she asked, changing the subject.
“Yeah, we’re gonna start Space Cowboy in a week,” Joey beamed.
“So when will it be out?” she asked.
“In about three weeks,” J.C. replied.
Edi looked down the line of performers and found Chris being unusually quiet. He sat fairly still, and looked away when her gaze met his. Then he looked back to her and smiled.
Then it was Edi's turn to look away, but not before she returned his smile. "So Chris, is Busta coming on the tour with you?"
"Yeah he is," Chris smiled. "He goes with me everywhere."
"So how old is he now?" Edi asked. She locked gazes with him, and his soft brown eyes calmed her.
"He's about two," Chris said softly.
They looked at each other for a moment before the woman DJ interrupted them. "Well, congratulations," she smiled, "You're our new DJ."
Edi smiled, but only partly because she won. She just couldn't jump around with Chris looking at her longingly like he was.
"Would you like to go to diner with us tonight?" he asked, surprising the others.
Edi thought quickly. Why not? If said no, she would only regret it the rest of her life. But going out with the number one boyband? "Sure," Edi replied softly.
"So we'll see you tomorrow morning," the other woman said, getting up.
"Okay, I'll be here," Edi said, shaking the DJ's hand. "Thank you."
"You deserve it. You'll be a great DJ," the woman said smiling. Then she left.
"Edi, right?" Chris asked. She nodded and he continued. "You have the most amazing eyes."
"Thank you," she blushed. "I love your new haircut."
"Okay, break it up," Joey interrupted. "You can drool over each other at dinner. I'm starved!"
"When aren't you?" Justin mumbled as they headed out.
