"Baby, I'll be back, I just need ... time. Just a little time to deal with this all. You know I love you, right? Right? I'll call you."

A quick brush of his lips across her forehead and he was gone, all but fleeing from the third floor terrace of Halifax Medical Center.

Wiping the tears from her cheeks she spoke into the afternoon breeze, "I know sweetheart. I know you'll be back."

But he was already gone.

The only one who heard was the tall dark man with the penetrating green eyes, watching from the opposite doorway, unseen by either one. Swiping a hand over his weary face he turned to leave. He needed food and rest before he could be of any use to her, and judging by the scene he had witnessed, she was going to need him to be strong enough for both of them.
